Amon Carter Museum of American Art announces new Conservator of Photographs

FORT WORTH, TX.- The Amon Carter Museum of American Art announces today that Fernanda Valverde has joined the art and research department as the conservator of photographs. Valverde brings to the museum a distinguished record of research, publications and extensive experience in photography conservation.

“We are thrilled to have Fernanda on our staff,” says Margi Conrads, deputy director of art and research. “She is celebrated internationally as an expert on the care and treatment of photographs and is a groundbreaking educator in the field of photography conservation. This trio of extraordinary talents is a perfect match for providing the best care for our photography collection and connecting it to our community.”

Valverde previously served as the Program Chair of the Master in Conservation of Documental Heritage and the International Postgraduate Program in Photograph Conservation at the National School for Conservation in Mexico City, Mexico. She has also worked at the National School for Conservation in areas such as paper conservation, art conservation and cultural heritage management. During her time in Mexico City, she also served as the photographer and conservation consultant at the National Library of Anthropology and History. Additionally, Valverde gained conservation experience during tenures at the Image Permanence Institute and the International Museum of Photography and Film at George Eastman House, both in Rochester, New York.

Valverde holds a Bachelor of Science in Conservation of Cultural Heritage from the National School of Conservation, Restoration, and Museology at the National Institute of Anthropology and History in Mexico City. She also has a Master of Science in Cross Disciplinary Professional Studies from Rochester Institute of Technology and was a Fulbright Fellow. During her post-graduate work, she studied the history and aesthetics of photography, conservation of photographs, and photographic science and technology.
