LONDON.- The extraordinary work of 14 of the world’s leading contemporary artists are to be offered as part of Founded 1793, the contemporary art auction at Bonhams New Bond Street taking place on 28 January.

Last year 14 major artists were invited to take part in a new art project to raise awareness and funds for Peace One Day, the not-for-profit organisation which campaigns for global recognition of the International Day of Peace (21 September). The task, which involved turning decommissioned M16 rifles into cutting-edge pieces of art, has produced some spectacular results by famous names such as Jake and Dinos Chapman, Polly Morgan, and Turner Prize winners Douglas Gordon and Jeremy Deller.

One of the works is by the celebrated artist, Peter Doig, whose painting, Pine House (Rooms for Rent), made £11.9m at auction in November 2014. Doig’s artwork for Peace One Day, Lion in the Sand M-16 (2014), is the study for a major canvas of the same name, and shows a lion against the Ethiopian flag on the butt of the M-16. It has an estimate of £5,000 - 7,000.

The project was curated by leading contemporary artist, Jake Chapman, and the refashioned weapons were previewed at the Institute of Contemporary Art in London during Frieze week in October 2014.

Peace One Day was founded by actor and film-maker Jeremy Gilley, who said: ‘I am hugely grateful to the artists involved for supporting Peace One Day and producing such wonderfully creative and memorable pieces.  Their contributions to this project will raise funds for the organisation, but more significantly will help to raise awareness of Peace Day – 21 September – around the world.

‘Jake Chapman continues to be a massive supporter of everything we do, and we are extremely grateful to him for bringing together such an incredible group of artists. To have their extraordinary work sold through Bonhams will provide the sale with the high-profile impact that this project deserves.’

Gareth Williams, Director of Post-War & Contemporary Art at Bonhams, added: ‘Bonhams is delighted to be working with Peace One Day and to be part of this hugely exciting initiative. It is always a privilege to see the motivating effect that art has on fundraising for good causes.’

The list of artists whose work will be offered at auction includes Jeremy Deller and Stuart Hughes, Douglas Gordon, Mat Collishaw, Marc Quinn, Polly Morgan, Jake and Dinos Chapman, Harland Miller, Yinka Shonibare, Ryan Gander, Jonathan Meese, Peter Doig, Kate Moss, Sam Taylor-Johnson, and Kim Jones.
