Sothebys New York will hold a ground-breaking auction dedicated to Contemporary Art from Mexico. Mexico Contemporary takes place 35 years after the first Latin American Art sale and will include both established figures and the younger, raiding-rising stars at the forefront of the Contemporary Art world.
The sale is led by Gabriel Orozcos, Atomists: Evasive Action and The Thief by Francis Alÿs while more recent works include 25,798 by Gabriel de la Mora and 1.1.136 (From The Series "Possibilities Of Structure" Subseries "Cosmos") And 1.1.136B (From The Series "Possibilities Of Structure" Subseries "Cosmos") by Eduardo Terrazas. The pre-sale exhibition opens to the public on 22nd November.
Lulu Creel, Sothebys Chairman, Latin America commented: In 1979 Sothebys held the first ever auction dedicated to Latin American Art. Thirty-five years after that pioneering move we continue to innovate with an evening sale dedicated to Contemporary Art from Mexico.
Anna Di Stasi, Sothebys Vice President, Latin American Art added: Sothebys inaugural Mexico Contemporary auction features some of the most exciting artists working in the country today. Widely represented in Mexican museums and established private collections, these artists will now be showcased to the global auction audience.
Atomists: Evasive Action by Gabriel Orozco forms part of a series of works in which the artist adorned photographs from British sports matches with his signature combination of elegant ellipses and circles (est. $300/400,000). In this example, England cricket captain Michael Atherton faces a ball from Indian fast bowler Javagal Srinath during a 1996 test match. By transforming the image with geometric abstraction, Orozco subtly creates a gesture of subversion towards the British establishment.
The Thief by Francis Alÿs shares its origin and title with the short film the artist created in 1999 upon the invitation of the Dia Art Foundation to produce a digital artwork (est. $200/300,000, above). Other highlights include Untitled from 2010, the most important Stefan Bruggemann work to appear at auction (est. $20/30,000), and Selected Ghosts # 21 by Carlos Amorales (est. $12/18,000).
