EDINBURGH.- North East auctioneer, author and curator Steven Moore joins Edinburgh auctioneers,
Lyon & Turnbull as a business development consultant. Steven, who makes regular appearances on BBCs Roadshow said I am delighted to be working with the team at Lyon & Turnbull. The North East has a wealth of beautiful homes, full of beautiful things and their Edinburgh auction rooms are ideally situated for people in the North East who want to buy or sell their antiques.
Stevens interest in antiques and passion for collecting started as a child. He looks back: "My father taught ceramics so I grew up with clay as a toy. The transformation of earth into an object of permanence has always fascinated me: I used to dig bottles from old tips and even skived off cross country at school to do this - bottles led to local pottery". By the age of 16, Steven had curated his first exhibition at Newcastles Laing Art Gallery and he had written his first book by 21. After studying to be an archaeologist, he moved into antique dealing and writing. He is one of the leading authorities of the work of artist Kenneth Rowntree after handling the sale of his studio in 2009.
Steven joined the Antiques Roadshow team in 2004 and counts among his favourite finds a self-portrait sculpture by Danish Artist Jais Nielsen, which was discovered at Coventry Cathedral in 2007. However, one of his most memorable Roadshow moments would have to be at Norwich Cathedral in 2005 when he was presented with a bottle of Scotch whisky containing a dead mouse!
Steven is involved in the Princes Regeneration Trust which saves our much-loved heritage by adapting historic buildings for future use. His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales is Founder and President of the Trust provides the necessary expertise, skills and tools to deliver successful heritage-led regeneration projects across the UK. Steven assisted the Trust when in June 2011, they stepped in to save the Middleport Pottery, Stoke-on-Trent. The historic site was constructed in 1888 for a well-known local ceramics company, Burgess & Leigh Limited, nestled in the heart of Burslem, Stoke-on-Trent, the world-renowned centre of ceramics. The Grade II* listed site is a red-brick maze, containing historic machinery, archives and collections in every corner.
