YONKERS, NY.- Mandy Greer, a Seattle-based artist, installs a fantastic world −The Ecstatic Moment − an installation at the Hudson River Museum, Yonkers from June 7 – September 14, 2014.

Greer creates visionary worlds she draws from mythology, fairy tales and from the mundane and magic of everyday life. The sewing machine and the crochet hook are her tools. Fabric and objects from the natural world her medium.

Last summer Greer visited Glenview, the Museum’s Victorian river home and was captivated by the stillness of afternoon light slanting through the windows and the home’s ability to create a sense of fantastical reverie. This summer she returns to the Museum with her site specific installation The Ecstatic Moment, her poetic response to a way of life in a world gone by. Alive with sumptuous birds, glittering chandeliers, and enigmatic figures draped in costume, Ecstatic Moment encompasses sculpture, photography, fabric wall panels, video, and performance. Greer includes decorative elements from Glenview drawn from nature – its birds under glass, and its patterns and colors.

Greer not only connects her family life, the environment, and myths in her works but attracts the interest of many communities by organizing crocheting workshops for the public in urban and rural spaces, weaving everyone’s stitches into her larger creations. As she prepares for her installation at the Hudson River Museum, Greer will host community crochet events in the Northwest. Just as much of her work is grounded in wandering and responding to the land, her passage overland from Seattle to Yonkers this spring will be a ‘residency on-the-road’ with elaborate costumes and her camera. The Museum’s social media arm will report on her progress across country as she actively makes new work for the exhibition.

Most recently Greer showed her distinctive creations in Paris in her installation “Every Moment is Lost Forever” for the international fiber installation exhibition MINIARTEXTI. This followed her spring 2013 multi-media performance with visionary choreographer Dayna Hanson for the Seattle Art Museum. She has also created performance projects and films with the internationally recognized Degenerate Art Ensemble. Among her many awards is one, in 2011, from the Centro di Cultura Contemporanea at Palazzo Strozzi, Florence, Italy for her installation in the exhibition “American Dreamers”. Her work has been shown at Henry Art Gallery, Bellevue Art Museum, Tacoma Art Museum, Frye Art Museum, Seattle Art Museum, Roq la Rue Gallery, the Bucheon Gallery and The Lab Contemporary Art Center, in San Francisco, the Tampa Museum of Art, Museum of Contemporary Craft, in Portland, Catalyst Project in Washington, D.C., and Aqua Art Miami.
