WAKEFIELD.- Yorkshire Sculpture Park presents a major solo exhibition by printmaker, painter and designer Angie Lewin. Angie Lewin: A Natural Line runs at the Park near Wakefield from 16 November 2013 until 23 February 2014.
Lewin, celebrated for her striking prints of skeletal plant forms set against the sky, has taken inspiration from YSPs historic, 500-acre landscape - which she has visited several times over the past year to draw, photograph and gather from the seasonally-changing habitat - to create a series of new prints and watercolours for the exhibition, all of which is available to buy.
Lewins work is featured in many public and private collections in the UK and abroad, including The London Institute, Aberystwyth University, Ashmolean Museum and The Victoria & Albert Museum. She has illustrated books for Faber and Faber, Penguin and Merrell, designed fabrics for Libertys of London and designs fabrics for St. Judes, which she founded and runs with husband Simon.
Angie Lewin studied BA (Hons) Fine Art Printmaking at Central St. Martins College of Art and Design (19831986), and postgraduate printmaking at Camberwell School of Arts and Crafts.
After working in London as an illustrator Lewin studied horticulture and a move to Norfolk prompted a return to printmaking.
Inspired by both the cliff tops and saltmarshes of the North Norfolk coast and the Scottish Highlands, Lewins work depicts these contrasting environments and their native flora in wood engraving, linocut, silkscreen, lithograph, watercolour and collage.
The exhibition in YSP Centre features Lewins paintings and prints, including an exclusive, limited edition, five-colour screen print hand-pulled at Jealous Print studio in London. Exclusive merchandise, including two Creamware mugs, tea towel and canvas bag is available to buy, as are Lewins new screen-printed fabrics for St. Judes, Meadows Edge and Stellar. A series of associated events, including a talk and tour with garden designer and writer, Noel Kingsbury, accompanies the exhibition.
In recent years, YSP has led successful exhibitions with some of the UKs best-known artists and designers including Rob Ryan, Donna Wilson and Mark Hearld.
YSP Shop showcases original work by international artists and contemporary designers and makers. The shop was awarded the title of Best Independent Retailer of the Year at the 2012 Northern Designs Awards.
