An oil chalk drawing, which presumably was a preliminary study for a sheet from this graphic cycle, is offered in the auction of Modern Art (lot 184).

MUNICH.- The big names of the international art scene will be there. Next to Picasso, Chagall and Warhol, Gabriele Münter will also provide a fresh spring scent from € 10.000 in the first Ketterer Kunst auctions that will open the season on April 19 and 20 with the following focal points:

1. Modern Art & Collection Schiefler
2. Post War/Contemporary Art

On 1. Modern Art
In 2012 Gabriele Münter had already realized a number of top results for a total of 13 works, of which five even soared to six-digit realms. The October auction with works up to € 20.000 was led by her 1941 oil painting “Dahlien“, which climbed to a result of € 158.600*.

Thus it will be very exciting to see her watercolor with India ink drawing “Blumenblatt/Vogelvase“ being called up as it was created only one year earlier. Especially the artist's simple motifs rendered with an almost naive cheerfulness and a likewise bright coloring are highly sought-after. The painted clay bird and the flower bouquet are among her favorite motifs. The estimate is at € 10.000-15.000.

In the section of sculptures the work “Kleines Biest“ by Gerhard Marcks carries the same estimate, its self-confident attitude calls reminiscence of Degas' fourteen-year-old standing dancer. Another work that fosters great expectations will be Ernst Barlach‘s bronze “Maske Friedrich Schult“ which was made after a gypsum model from 1920 and has been estimated at € 6.000-8.000.

Among the lots making for excitement in the auction room are works by Paul Klee (“Der Verliebte”, estimate: € 16.000-18.000), Kurt Schwitters (“To Hjalmar Gabrielson”, estimate: € 18.000-24.000), Karl Schmidt-Rottluff (“Stillleben mit Tannenzapfen”, estimate: € 12.000-15.000) and Heinrich Campendonk. His 1912 watercolor “Vier badende Akte” will enter the race with an estimate of € 18.000-24.000.

However, works by renowned artists may already be obtained in three- or low four-digit realms. For instance, a view of the town of “Lüneburg“, a charcoal drawing by the New York artist Lyonel Feininger will be called up with an estimate of € 4.000-6.000.

Next to an aquatint etching by Max Ernst and a pencil drawing of a Ticino mountain farm by Karl Hofer (estimate each € 1.800-2.400), Erich Heckel is also represented, among others, with the 1914 woodcut “Sonnenaufgang“ (estimate: € 2.800-3.400).

“This is the perfect opportunity to either enhance an existing collection or to lay the basis for a first own collection“, says auctioneer and company owner Robert Ketterer.

On 2. Post War/Contemporary Art
This section is led by a series of woodcuts in colors by Friedensreich Hundertwasser, titled “Nana Hyaku Mizu“ it has been estimated at € 22.000-25.000. The title means ‘Seven Hundred Waters‘ and does not only reference the artist’s name but also the sheer inexhaustible variety of his artistic creation.

Next to an untitled work in blue ink on paper by Georg Baselitz from 1982 (estimate: € 10.000-15.000) and several ceramics by Niki de Saint-Phalle, other top lots are a chalk drawing by Hans Hartung (estimate: € 14.000-16.000), David Hockney’s illusionistically composed etching ”Rue de Seine“ (estimate: € 10.000-15.000) as well as a chalk with gouache by Serge Poliakoff (both estimated at € 10.000-15.000). The ”Abstrakte Komposition“ is a sheet in soft colors, in its expression it is all in line with the then predominant characteristic imagery.

The section of Pop Art, already a classic of Contemporary Art, is represented by works from, among others Banksy, Jim Dine, Damien Hirst, Robert Rauschenberg and, of course, Andy Warhol. One of the highlights is also Roy Lichtenstein‘s offset lithography in colors “Crak!“ from 1963/64. The copy aside from the edition of 300 was made as an announcement for a Lichtenstein exhibition in the Gallery Leo Castelli from 28 September to 24 October, 1963 and has been estimated at € 9.000-12.000.

After the stunning result for an oil painting (starting price: € 280.000, result: € 512.000*) and a watercolor (starting price: € 28.000, result: € 116.000*) by the Beijing artist Zao Wou-Ki in December 2012 at Ketterer Kunst, two aquatint etchings in colors (estimate each € 900-1.200) by the French-by-choice will be called up that will also suit the small purse.

Exciting art by, for instance, Rupprecht Geiger, Paul Jenkins, Jasper Johns, Anish Kapoor, Alex Katz, Sigmar Polke and Jackson Pollock will complete the range of offerings.
