BERLIN.- Discovering art in gallery spaces, gaining insight into the contexts of its production, and meeting artists: with some 53 participating galleries,
Gallery Weekend Berlin constitutes an exquisite art experience. Renowned galleries like Konrad Fischer, Max Hetzler and Sprüth Magers, as well as high-profile galleries such as Isabella Bortolozzi, Johann König or Gregor Podnar will open the doors of their exhibition spaces. In addition, three new entrants were invited to present their programs this year: Plan B offers new perspectives on Eastern Europe; Kraupa-Tuskany Zeidlers program explores the interface of technology and economics; and Nature Morte opens new vistas with India.
The list of participating galleries reflects the citys multifaceted art scene, which thanks to the longstanding engagement of different galleries has developed tremendously since the vacuum of the 1990s into a well-structured scene. The range of galleries also offers a panoramic view of an art city which holds special significance within the art world, and which serves as a production place for many internationally acclaimed artists.
Gallery Weekend Berlin focuses explicitly on the gallery space as a quasi-condensed version of the art world: as the singular place where art making and art market, but also exhibiting and viewing art, coexist so closely together. Nowhere else can art be experienced as extensively and at the same time as intimately as in a gallery.
The organizers see it as their responsibility to ensure that Berlin remains internationally relevant and to further develop its global standing. It is with this in mind that Cédric Aurelle was appointed General Manager of Gallery Weekend Berlin as well as of abc art berlin contemporary. Aurelle, who is also the initiator of the gallery exchange program Berlin-Paris, brings years of experience to the new position and will help strengthen Berlins position in the international art market. The list of artists, which will be announced in March, assures this will be an exciting weekend.
