WASHINGTON, DC.- For 40 days and 40 nights two unique interactive Tobias Klein installations will transform Industry Gallery in Washington, DC.

Virtual Sunset, a 3-year project, explores the ephemeral notion of the sunset as an everlasting continuous global event in our ever expanding networked environment. From February 9th through March 20th, 2013--the day of the global equinox--the worldwide connected live installation examines the transient concept of the sunset between our digital reality and the actual geographic location of INDUSTRY Gallery, correlating virtual time with the daily crescendo of sunsets over Washington. The work is the first crowd-sourced, choreographed global sunset, and includes a level of synchronization between actual and virtual moments projected in real-time onto silicone translucent tubing to create a three-dimensional artwork evolution in INDUSTRY. Through modulation and precise timing, the work achieves the creation of artificial time zones--synchronized web-realities--with the daily returning phenomena of the sunset.

The Invisible Human component to the exhibition brings together contemporary medical technology with the scientific art form of crystal growing. Studio Tobias Klein and ordinary Ltd. turn a data imprint of a human body, digitally "sectioned" through magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), into a template onto which crystals are grown under interactive audience participation in the Gallery. The body sections are given shape through the crystallization processes that echo those occurring in the body as it dies. The audience is invited to influence the growth of the crystals through manipulating the temperature within the exhibition cases. Each slice is a combination of a unique human being, a unique crystallization process, and a unique installation context. Interaction has an impact on the resulting growth patterns. As one phase turns into the next, the space continuously changes, oscillating between life and death.

Studio Tobias Klein is a practice operating between architecture and art, across the fields of experimental design, interactivity and urbanism. Trained internationally as an architect, Klein's work maintains a fascination with the construct of space, while questioning its modern interpretation. Through the works at various scales, his studio achieves a re-positioning of this understanding in the context of embodiment, perception and projection. The works constantly evolve between static and dynamic models, shifting from objects to installations, prospecting new visual territories in the field of narrated embodied space.
