NEW YORK, NY.- Stephen Haller Gallery presents The Geometry of Longing, a group exhibition exploring the connection between geometric symbols and abstract art; and introducing the work of renowned sculptor Bruno Romeda to the gallery

The Geometry of Longing gives examples of artists’ use of mathematical symbols simple geometric shapes to capture the emotional content of what we perceive - artists whose geometric forms are not simply rote precision, but intensely human expression.

One is able to perceive in these artists’ works some reference to lived experience: to architecture (Martin), nature (Ross), the artificial (Zox and the Chinese vessel), language/calligraphy (Alexis), vision (the Oakes) form (Romeda), imagery (Fukui).

In the work of Italian born sculptor Bruno Romeda there are simple shapes, but complex surfaces: always the awareness of the human hand – of the longing to touch, shape, mold - the tactility of the artistic impulse. In Ross – the stability of horizontal lines is juxtaposed with the unpredictability of vertical drips.

The Oakes Twins deal with the shape of human vision, of how we perceive – a confluence of art and science. Perceptual historian Jonathan Crary described the curving lines of their drawing method as one of the most original breakthroughs in the rendering of visual space since the Renaissance.

Larry Zox took inspiration from a Chinese vessel seen in a museum - exploring the idea through the mathematical precision of drawings on graph paper, then the taping and drawing of lines that formed the structure of his painting. In all these artists’ works one experiences form infused with emotion.

Artist SAM JURY’S work will also be exhibited at the gallery to coincide with her solo exhibition Coerced Nature opening Feb 13th at the Rose Art Museum.
