SAN DIEGO, CA.- Nine new temporary art exhibits have opened at San Diego International Airport. The San Diego County Regional Airport Authority has a regular schedule of exhibits and performances that engage travelers and enhance the airport environment. These latest exhibits offer guests a glimpse into San Diego’s sculptural history, a rhapsody of textiles and a dynamic new way to appreciate the printed word.

Birth of the New by Kareem Ralph Amin
Through May 2013; Terminal 2 East, Pre-security
As an abstract painter, Kareem Ralph Amin’s images and patterns textural patterns distinctively creates a contrasting color palette brought to life bountifully with warm and neutral colors. Amin uses charcoal and oil on the surface of the canvas and experiments with layering patterns that become augmented by one medium and loosened with another medium. Mysterious figures begin to emerge through an interlacing of patterns and a depth of layering.

To Sit by Dominique Houriet Through April 2013;
Terminal 2 East, Gate 22 Hold Room
The chair is another means for this artist to express his passion for art and design. The challenge is to find the balance between the aesthetic and function of each piece. Each one is a handcrafted treasure. Originally from the Texas hill country, Dominique Houriet moved to San Diego after receiving his Master of Architecture degree. He has been creating art, practicing architectural design and construction for more than nine years in Southern California and Mexico.

Geometry of Curves by Charlotte Bird Through February 2013;
Terminal 2 East, Post-security
Charlotte Bird has been creating textile-based artwork for 25 years. This work captures the possibilities at both the microscopic level and as seen by the Hubble telescope. Her art quilts and mixed media sculptures often recall universal forms like the circle and spiral. Time, process and nature are persistent themes.

Sensational Silks: Exploring Color by the San Diego Silk Guild
Through February 2013; Commuter Terminal, Pre-security
The artwork in this exhibit, featuring creations by the San Diego Silk Guild, began as white fabric. The dyeing process allows the pieces to become an art form one can wear and also allows for the creation of sculptural pieces for home or commercial applications. The San Diego Silk Guild formed in 2007, as a local chapter of Silk Painters International, Inc., with a mission to further silk art through outreach, exhibits and workshops.

Chromatic Cityscape by Lee Sie Through February 2013;
Commuter Terminal Exhibit Wall, Pre-security
This exhibit presents iconic views of San Diego, captured by photographer Lee Sie. The built and natural environments serve as accompaniment to each composition, acting as the rhythm section, giving form and support. But the colors play the leading role: the yellow of sunrise or the pink and purple hues of sunset become concerto scenes through which primary colors carry the melody and dominate the mood.

Snapshot in Sculpture by Objects USA
Through February 2013; Terminal 2 West, Pre-security
This exhibit of objects helps us observe what modernism looked like in San Diego in the decades after World War II. Recently, collectors such as Dave Hampton, Steve Aldana and Ron Kerner of ObjectsUSA have renewed interest in locally made midcentury modern art. Hampton has selected works from local collections to reacquaint viewers with San Diego's midcentury art in three dimensions.

Printing Before Digital by the Bay Park Press
Through February 2013; Terminal 2 East, Pre-security
The Bay Park Press Gallery presents several print and artist book exhibitions each year representing local, regional and national artists. This exhibit features a variety of unique items from their collection such as handmade, hand-printed artist books; printmaking materials and letterpress projects. Each piece is an original work of art.

The Art of Polymer Clay: New Jewelry in a New Medium by Mingei International Museum Through February 2013; Terminal 2 West, Post-security
This exhibit showcases beads and adornment created by polymer masters, including Pier Voulkos, Tory Hughes and Cynthia Toops. A synthetic modeling compound, polymer clay is a unique, contemporary and amazingly adaptable art material. Its range seems limitless and is used today to create beads, jewelry, sculpture, dolls, books, mosaics, vessels and wall art. The museum is dedicated to furthering understanding of art of the people (mingei) from all eras and cultures of the world and features dynamic, changing exhibitions of folk art, craft and design.

Trash? Look Again by the New Children’s Museum
Through February 2013; Terminal 2 East, Pre-security`
This exhibit utilizes repurposed materials in imaginative ways and encourages viewers to examine how trash can be used as material for making art. Based on the theme of the museum’s current exhibition, TRASH, this mural is composed of more than 1,500 recycled items and depicts San Diego’s landmarks and natural beauty. The piece was created by museum visitors who participated in their yearly Diversity Day event celebrating San Diego’s rich, diverse culture.
