Rembrandt van Rijn, Christ Healing the Sick (The Hundred Guilder Print), circa 1643-49. Estimate: $150,000 to $200,000.

NEW YORK, NY.- Print connoisseurs and collectors of Salvador Dalí’s work will have a treat this Halloween, when Swann Galleries offers an outstanding assortment of Old Master Through Modern Prints, followed by a collection of Prints, Drawings & Livres d’Artiste by Salvador Dalí.

There are more than 280 old master prints offered in the sale, which include a section of 50 exceptional etchings by Rembrandt van Rijn. Among these are Christ Healing the Sick (The Hundred Guilder Print), circa 1643-49, considered the artist’s most ambitious, complex and highly worked composition as a printmaker, which was known in the 17th century for being valued at a hundred guilders or more, now estimated at $150,000 to $200,000. There is also one of the artist’s largest and most complex prints, Christ Before Pilate: Large Plate, 1635-36 ($50,000 to $80,000); a crisp impression of the extremely scarce Self Portrait Leaning on a Stone Sill, 1639 ($40,000 to $60,000); and one of only 10 known impressions of Woman Sitting Half-Dressed by a Stove, 1658, to come to auction in the last 25 years ($60,000 to $90,000).

Among a fine selection of engravings by Albrecht Dürer are The Nemesis, circa 1501-02 ($25,000 to $35,000); Adam and Eve, 1504 ($60,000 to $90,000); Knight, Death and the Devil, 1513 ($20,000 to $30,000); and Melancolia I, 1514 ($30,000 to $50,000).

Other old master highlights are Lucas van Leyden’s The Raising of Lazarus, engraving, 1508 ($30,000 to $50,000); Augustin Hirschvogel’s River Landscape with a Large Tree at Left, etching, 1546 ($15,000 to $20,000); Jacob van Ruisdael’s Landscape with Two Men and a Dog, etching ($10,000 to $15,000); and several appealing prints by Francisco José de Goya.

The 19th-century prints portion of the auction features Vincent van Gogh’s only etching, Homme à la Pipe: Portrait du Docteur Gachet, one of only four printed in red, from 1890. The print is a portrait of the physician who cared for van Gogh in Auvers-sur-Oise, and taught him etching. It was completed just two months before van Gogh killed himself ($60,000 to $90,000).

From the same era are James A.M. Whistler’s The Fishing Boat, etching and drypoint, 1879-80 ($10,000 to $15,000); Monet and Thornley’s lithographs Brouillard à Vetheuil, circa 1908 ($12,000 to $18,000) and Fillette, dans l’allée d’un parc, portant des bouquets, circa 1892 ($15,000 to $20,000); and Paul Gauguin’s Mahna no Varua Ino, woodcut, 1893-94 ($15,000 to $20,000).

A select assortment of American prints includes Edward Hopper’s ever popular Night Shadows, etching, 1921 ($30,000 to $50,000); Martin Lewis’s stunning Glow of the City, etching, 1929 ($15,000 to $20,000); Grant Wood’s picturesque February, 1941 and March, 1939 ($4,000 to $6,000 each); and José Clemente Orozco’s compelling Dead Woman, lithograph, 1935 ($2,000 to $3,000).

Grabbing attention among the modern European prints is Max Backmann’s Die Nacht, lithograh, 1919, which depicts the violence and brutality of the riots that swept Berlin in November 1918 with the establishment of the Weimar Republic ($100,000 to $150,000).

Works by Pablo Picasso include early etchings, such as minotaure attaquant une Amazone, etching, 1933 ($10,000 to $15,000); mid-century lithographs, like Jacqueline lisant, 1957 ($25,000 to $35,000) and faience ware, including a pitcher with a Painted Face, 1954 ($15,000 to $20,000); and colorful after prints, among them Nature morte a la Langouste, color aquatint, 1945 ($8,000 to $12,000).

Also featured are Wassily Kandinsky’s Lithograph Blau, color lithograph, 1922 ($15,000 to $20,000); Georges Rouault’s Miserer, complete set of 58 aquatints, 1922-27 ($70,000 to $100,000); Marc Chagall’s Les Arums, color lithograph on Arches, 1975 ($30,000 to $50,000); the Henry Moore portfolio Nudes, with 10 lithographs, 1976 ($10,000 to $15,000); and mind-bending lithographs by M.C. Escher, among them Bond of Union, 1956 ($20,000 to $30,000); Waterfall, 1961 ($25,000 to $35,000) and a more than 12-foot long tour-de-force color woodcut, Metamorphosis II, on Japan paper, 1939-40 ($80,000 to $120,000).

A separate catalogue offers a select private collection of prints, related drawings and livres d’artiste formerly in the collection of Salvador Dalí’s foremost publisher, Pierre Argillet—it is one of the best collections of Dalí’s graphic work to come to market in several decades.

Argillet and Dalí’s collaboration produced nearly 200 original prints illustrating texts such as Goethe’s Faust, 1969, Guillaume Apollinaire’s Poèmes Secrets, 1967, and Leopold von Sacher-Masoch’s Vénus aux Fourrures, 1969, all of which are offered. Dalí’s work with Argillet, and with print publishers in general during this period, also called for the creation of numerous drawings, or designs for the prints, in watercolor, ink and pencil. These macquettes are well represented in the current collection, with superb, lively drawings spanning a wide breadth of Dalí’s career, from prints in the Chants de Maldoror series from 1934, to the Petites Nus, 1973.

The auction will begin at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, October 31.

The works of art will be on public exhibition at Swann Galleries on Friday, October 26, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Saturday, October 27, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.; Monday, October 29 and Tuesday, October 30, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
