AppArtAward 2012 winners to be announced at ZKM / Karlsruhe
The winners are to be announced at the awards ceremony.

KARLSRUHE.- The winners of the AppArtAward 2012 are now certain. From a total of 84 submissions from 13 nations, among others, from Europe, USA, Brazil and Japan, the Jury, presided by ZKM-Chairman Peter Weibel, selects the winners. Not only works of art in App-format in iOS and Android were submitted, but also and for the first time, numerous software solutions in Windows 7. Several creative software solutions from the categories “Prize Artistic Innovation”, “Game Art” and “Cloud Art” were submitted by May 11, 2012, and in a surprising range of different artistic aspects. The presentation of awards is to take place on July 13, 2012 at the ZKM | Karlsruhe.

The winners are to be announced at the awards ceremony.

On the whole, the quality of the submitted Apps was at a high level, although addressing different fields. Thus, Apps designed as musical instruments were juxtaposed to those applications that established connections to music albums or histories in visual form. References to well-known works of art, but also to advanced updates of retro-computergames were also submitted. Applications showing the artistic representation of time were displayed no less than were those
demonstrating a clear interest in semantic links to knowledge. Developers of poetic Apps, Apps in retro-style, but also meta-Apps felt themselves well-represented in the call for proposals. All submissions met the use of technical conditions of mobile devices, especially the consistent use of sensors and camera function. The common denominator among all the applications was an understanding of games.

“The submissions for this AppArt-Award testify to a high degree of innovation. Addressing contemporary social themes, such as sustainability is as much apparent as is the sustained interest and questioning of swarm behavior or swarm intelligence, whose characteristic forms have been recognizable on the Internet for considerable time. Collective creativity was displayed both in the applications and content as well in its formal features. Furthermore, numerous submissions distinguished themselves by a high degree of poetic potential, and so indicate the current gamification endeavors, as witnessed in the corporate economic sphere.” (Peter Weibel)

The awards ceremony will take place on Friday, July 13, 2012 at 8 p.m. at the ZKM_Cube. From 10 p.m. onwards, the varied awards program is followed up in the App-Lounge, which provides the setting for possible creative exchange between visitors and App-developers.
