LONDON.- The British Council announced that Jeremy Deller has been selected to represent Britain at the 55th Venice Biennale. He will present a solo exhibition in the British Pavilion, which will run from June to November 2013.
Born in London in 1966, Deller is an artist of a different stripe from most of his contemporaries. Often working in collaboration with others (among them artists, makers, musicians and other members of the public), he brings together elements from traditional and contemporary culture to create new types of work: films, installations, performances and events which are often humorous, but which don't seek to satirise the people or subjects involved. His works display an engagement with all sorts of communities that exist in today's society, and whose interests are brought to our attention by Deller with wit and clarity.
The UKs presentation at the Venice Biennale is selected by an independent panel of arts experts drawn from across the UK. The members of this panel change for every edition of the Biennale. The Selection Committee for the 2013 Venice Biennale consists of:
Ben Borthwick, Chief Executive and Artistic Director, Artes Mundi, Cardiff
Maoliosa Boyle, Director, Void Gallery, Derry
Chris Dercon, Director, Tate Modern, London
Simon Groom, Director, Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, Edinburgh
Waldemar Januszczak, Art Critic, The Sunday Times
Jenni Lomax, Director, Camden Arts Centre, London
Victoria Pomery, Director, Turner Contemporary, Margate
Simon Wallis, Director, The Hepworth Wakefield
Speaking about Dellers selection for the 2013 British Pavilion, Chris Dercon states: 'Jeremy Deller is an exciting and daring choice: he is a master of an art which is very different from most contemporary art production. His observations and actions, invoking and depicting the harsh morals of contemporary life, are incredibly precise, yet full of comical relief. Deller's art is representing British culture at its best: it is an art of the real - poignant and often confrontational - yet full of compassion and never dull.'
Speaking about his selection, Deller has 'promised to do his best.'
Dellers work has been presented in major solo exhibitions throughout the world. These include: Sacrilege, Glasgow Green (2012); Joy in People, Hayward Gallery (2012); Jeremy Deller: Manchester Tracks, RISD Museum, Providence (2011); The Modern Institute, Glasgow (2011); Local Artist, Void Gallery, Derry (2010); It Is What It Is: Conversations About Iraq, The New Museum, New York (2009); Carte Blanche à Jeremy Deller, Palais de Tokyo, Paris (2008); Munster Sculpture Project, Munster (2007); De la Warr Pavilion, Bexhill (2006).
Jeremy Deller lives and works in London. He is represented in the UK by The Modern Institute, Glasgow, Art: Concept, Paris and internationally by Gavin Browns enterprise, New York.
