NEW YORK, NY.- Stephen Haller Gallery artist Sam Jury wins first prize in To Extremes: Public Art in a Changing World, an invitational juried exhibition of imaginative and striking proposals for public artworks that explore climate change and extreme events. Science Journalist Eli Kintisch is curator of the project.

An exhibition of proposed artworks, To Extremes sought proposals for public art projects from 50 invited artists and designers. A jury of experts in the visual arts and climate sciences selected the winners and proposals that would make up the exhibition and the winner’s projected public art work scheduled for next year.

The event will run as part of the Cambridge Science Festival from April 20th – 29th at Maseeh Hall, MIT, Cambridge, MA. Sponsors include: Knight Science Journalism Fellowship at MIT; Artists in Context; Maseeh Hall, MIT; Museum of Science; Urban Arts Institute MassArt; and Harvard University Graduate School of Design.

Artist Sam Jury proposed a site-specific video exhibit for her winning proposal that features commissioned films that explore what she calls "the philosophical and psychological effect of climate extremes." Through an algorithm that will respond in real-time to extreme weather data, the installation would humanize and respond to climatic events as they occur.

This accomplishment is the latest recognition for Jury, whose otherworldly, evocative style was celebrated when she was awarded last year's coveted Ruth Ann and Nathan Perlmutter Award from the Rose Art Museum at Brandies which will host a solo exhibition of her video works and installations in 2013. The Perlmutter honors emerging artists on the cusp of international acclaim. Sam Jury will also be a featured artist in the inaugural exhibition of the Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum at Michigan State University. The striking new Zaha Hadid-designed art museum opens this fall. The inaugural exhibition In Search of Time is curated by founding director Michael Rush.

Best known for her hauntingly beautiful photography-based work and video portraits in light, Sam Jury is a truly international artist. Jury’s first artist residency was in Sharjah United Arab Emirates. Her direct response to the non-sustainable living conditions of the Gulf States is evidenced in themes in her current body of work.

Jury has collaborated internationally with artists from China and exhibited there in Beijing and Pingyao. Her work has been exhibited in solo exhibitions forever is never at the Herbert F Johnson Museum, Cornell, and Still and Still Moving at the Irish Museum of Modern Art (IMMA), Dublin, where she was artist in residence. Her video another thing coming screened at the Festival International de Arte in Murcia, Spain. Exhibitions include Art After Dark at the Louise Blouin Institute, London and At 50: The Krannert Art Museum, 1961-2011 in Illinois. Sam Jury graduated with an MFA in painting from Cornell University followed by a two year Fellowship at the Royal Academy Schools, London completed in 2002. She has lived and worked in the USA and Middle East and is now based in the UK. Sam Jury is represented by Stephen Haller Gallery of New York.
