NEW YORK, NY.- As Damien Hirst begins his triumphantly successful year, with exhibitions of his spot paintings with the venerable Gagosian Galleries on international view, and a full retrospective at the Tate Modern, London, opened April 4, 2012, Manifold Editions will simultaneously unveil never-before-seen woodcuts of Hirsts spots for unprecedented value.
As the art market boomed in 2007, Hirst created headlines with his work For the Love of God, a platinum human skull covered in 8,601 diamonds, totalling $23.6 million to create. At the time of its production, The New York Times credited the piece as The most expensive new work of art ever made. The monumentally successful and critically lauded artist has now inverted the paradigm by creating editions inspired by his celebrated spot series at price-points accessible to a diversity of collectors.
Hirst first introduced spot compositions at the ground-breaking and illustrious 1988 Freeze exhibition in London. Spot paintings, drawings and prints have since become one of the main strands of his artistic output with his spot motifs creating a lasting influence on design, advertising and popular culture.
Ive always had a phenomenal love of color, I just move color around on its own. So thats where the spot paintings came fromto create that structure to do those colors, and do nothing. I suddenly got what I wanted. It was just a way of pinning down the joy of color. Damien Hirst Manifold Editions is proud to exhibit new works by this world-famous artist for its New York City and US, debut beginning at the Affordable Art Fair. Notes founder James Booth-Clibborn:
Damien Hirst is now recognized as a global star and it is a privilege to be able to première substantial but affordable new work on our first US appearance, and to introduce these works to New York collectors
