LINCOLN, MA.- DeCordova Sculpture Park and Museum announces Associate Curator of Contemporary Art Dina Deitsch and Abigail Ross Goodman, formerly co-director of the Judi Rotenberg Gallery, will co-curate the 2012 deCordova Biennial. “I am thrilled to work with Abi.” Deitsch commented on the hiring of Goodman as co-curator. “She has an excellent eye for contemporary art and brings unparalleled experience in serving the Boston art community through her long leadership of the Judi Rotenberg Gallery.”

The 2010 Biennial, curated by Deitsch, was the first of its kind for deCordova after twenty years of Annual exhibitions. Moving to a two-year cycle, Deitsch expanded the Museum’s curatorial voice by incorporating an advisory board—the members of the board for the 2012 Biennial will be announced this winter. The format of the Biennial will continue to evolve, and it has been the goal of Director Dennis Kois that the Biennial curatorial team shift with each iteration. “The intention is that the Biennial helps advance regional artists as well as models of curatorial practice. Bringing in Abi to work with Dina on the Biennial will offer a new and very interesting curatorial vision for this year’s project.” Kois noted. “As a gallerist, Abi has been a leader in supporting regional artists, and I am excited to see where she and Dina take the Biennial as she translates that interest and support to a museum setting.”

Given Goodman’s former role as a commercial gallerist, her role as Biennial co-curator will be framed by a code of ethics drafted by the Museum and signed by Goodman. Hence the 2012 Biennial will not include any artist represented by the Judi Rotenberg Gallery within the last ten years, nor any artist sold by the gallery above a certain dollar threshold in the past ten years even if they were not specifically represented by the gallery. Additionally excluded are any artists currently represented by the Dodge Gallery, opened this year by a former staffer of the Judy Rotenberg Gallery in New York City. The Biennial will continue to highlight New England talent from emerging, to mid-career and internationally acclaimed artists and will survey a variety of media.
