WINTERTHUR.- Today 27 th November, Fundación MAPFRE and the Fotomuseum Winterthur have opened the photography exhibition Graciela Iturbide, which will be on show until 8 th February at the Fotomuseum exhibition hall in Winterthur (Switzerland).

The creator of a broad, intense, unusual oeuvre, Iturbide is one of the leading names in artistic photography inspired by social and cultural norms and values. Her contribution and talent have been recognised with the recent granting (2008) of the Hasselblad Award, the world’s highest distinction in photography.

With over 180 photographs, the show presents one of the most comprehensive anthologies of her career to date. Moreover, it also devotes special attention to her most recent work, which is practically unknown in Europe.

Graciela Iturbide (Mexico City, 1942) is one of the most outstanding Mexican photographers on the contemporary world scene. Over a four-decade career she has built an oeuvre that is intense and deeply singular, fundamental for understanding the development of photography in Mexico and the rest of Latin America.

The exhibition catalogue is a painstaking selection of 180 photographs taken over Graciela Iturbide’s four-decade career. Published in English and Spanish, the catalogue features texts by the exhibition curator Marta Dahó and the Mexican writer and journalist Juan Villoro.
