The Neuberger Museum of Art Presents New Media: Why

PURCHASE, NY.- The Neuberger Museum of Art presents New Media: Why, on view through June 28, 2009. New Media: Why is the fifth of a series that investigates thematic aspects of technology-based artwork. “The show features electronic artwork using innovations in data visualization, interface design, biotechnology and robotics to explore parallels between science and art and its social import,” notes Jacqueline Shilkoff, Associate Curator, Neuberger Museum of Art, who organized the series for the museum. The show also investigates how artists use dynamic, interactive technologies to reveal the logic, structure and beauty inherent in experimental, non-traditional applications. Included in new media: why are a site-specific work by Douglas Irving Repetto that synthesizes robotic and organic materials to recreate a tangible, responsive version of neural systems; a participatory environment by Margot Lovejoy in which to exchange autobiographical narratives; an installation by Paul Vanouse that explores the ethics and interpretation of genetic research and its impact on defining identity; and an interactive database by Burak Arikan that tracks the economic valuation of labor in social networking sites. new media: why was curated by Jacqueline Shilkoff, Associate Curator/New Media and the Digital Museum. Exhibition support is provided by the David Bermant Foundation.
