Call for Entries: SMart Multimedia Art Festival

GRAND RAPIDS, MI.- 'We are looking for multimedia at which has been created today, because yesterday is already art history,' says Dr. Zora Carrier, curator of the SMart Multimedia Art Festival. Where is tomorrow in multimedia art? That is the motto of the 4th SMart Festival in Grand Rapids, Michigan (USA). Artists are invited to submit applications showcasing their fresh new work for this year's SMart Multimedia Art Festival.

From April 1-7, 2009, the Festival takes center stage as an international festival of creativity. SMart is a collaborative multimedia art festival founded by Open Concept Gallery. The exhibitions and events attract hundreds of participants in and around the area's most important cultural institutions. Contributors to this year's SMart Festival include: the Arts Council of Greater Grand Rapids, Aquinas College, ByrneBoehm Gallery, Calvin College, the Grand Rapids Community Media Center, Grand Valley State University, Kendall College of Art and Design, Ferris State University, and the Urban Institute for Contemporary Arts.

The SMart Festival presents the latest trends in multimedia art unrestricted by scripted format and will open with a seven-day festival featuring a variety of events. The week-long event showcases multimedia art works chosen by a panel of international curators. As a festival of new art, the SMart Festival provides a realistic assessment of the current state of development in this genre. It is this that defines its function as a gauge of aesthetics.

Thinking outside the box, the SMart Festival is looking for new ways for presenting art. We are particularly interested in developing new forms for the presentation of media art beyond the gallery environment. For the past several years, the SMart Festival has commissioned a new team of curators and designers to create an innovative exhibition design, both technically and artistically, for presenting exhibitions in the context of city life. We are pleased to have earned the attention and broad recognition of a highly specialized audience in years past for our pioneering work in this field. In this new frontier, only a small number of convincing approaches have been exploited.

The Application deadline is March 12, 2009. All information and entry forms can be found at www.SMart.OpenConceptGallery.org
