Bennett Media Studio Presents Queens and Whores: Jezevel According to Carla Gannis

NEW YORK, NY.- To some Jezebel is an arcane reference, to others she represents an archetype that resonates into the 21st century. Carla Gannis will discuss how her Jezebels personify, through an artistic process of digital collage and appropriation, the mythology, history and stereotypes that have shaped and defined femininity within our collective unconsciousness for many generations.

Michael Weinstein in Chicago's New City Art says of Gannis's work: "Intrigued by Jezebel in all her manifestations–from biblical seductress inviting hapless men to sin, to a victim, rebel or healthy assertive woman in feminist narratives–Carla Gannis embeds her photographic heroine in color scenarios that she creates in the computer. ...Postmodern Jezebel knows no bounds and that is just Gannis's point."

In Gannis's recently published monograph Jezebel, art critic Jane Harris writes: "Composed as digital tableaux that 'remix' historical and fictional Jezebels, past and future tense, and real and imagined scenes, her [Gannis's] works offer much more than simple fanfare. Highly cinematic in scope and tone, their darkly gothic visions recall the films of David Lynch, Alfred Hitchcock, and David Cronenberg, as well as the virtual realms of video game heroines like Lara Croft and Joanna Dark."

Born in North Carolina, Carla Gannis currently lives and works in New York City. A trained painter, Gannis shifted her focus and began producing digital print and installation work in the 1990s. Gannis is the recipient of several awards, including a 2005 New York Foundation for the Arts (NYFA) Grant in Computer Arts, an Emerge 7 Fellowship from the Aljira Art Center, and a Chashama AREA Visual Arts Studio Award in New York, NY. She has exhibited in solo and group exhibitions both nationally and internationally. Most recently she has had solo exhibitions at the Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art in Boulder, CO, TZR Galerie in Dusseldorf, Germany and Kasia Kay Art Projects Gallery in Chicago, Il. Gannis teaches in Digital Arts at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn and The School of Visual Arts in New York.

In addition to the artist talk & multimedia presentation, many of Gannis's print works will be on view in the studio.
