Returning - In the mid eighties Howard Gross escaped to New Orleans to recover from some personal sadness. While he was there he rented a studio in the French Quarter and painted for six months. He returned to those paintings two years ago and continued to work on them, minus the sadness. These paintings form the foundation for this exhibition.
About Howard Gross - Howard Gross began his artistic career in Chicago with two solo exhibitions at the Alan Frumkin Gallery following his MFA from the Art Institute of Chicago. His early works consisted of debris and decay imposed on familiar objects such as butter dishes, bicycles, boxes and furniture. One such sculpture - Heidi's Bicycle is now in the collection of the Weatherspoon Art Museum. Howard relocated to New York in the mid 70's and began exhibiting with OK Harris Gallery and the then Truman Gallery. At this time he began using photography as a means of expression. His first series was shots of cracks in sidewalks, roads and buildings in New York. Then he went on to the series for which he is renown- the "A Closed Eye Concept". This series depicted art world members such as Leo Castelli, Louise Bourgeois and Agnes Gund with their eyes closed. Howard later updated the series in 1998 and exhibited the dual photographs of each individual at the PS 1 Contemporary Art Center. Since that time, he has shunned exhibiting to a large extent, showing only once in 2000 at the Florence Lynch Gallery his concept based "Notes on a String" and in 2007 at Ch'i Contemporary Fine Art with "An Elusive Moment" an exhibition of his organic drawings and sculptures.
