TYLER, TX- The Tyler Museum of Art continues to expand its staff to meet the organization’s growing needs, most recently with the appointment of Mary Catherine “Katie” Powell as the TMA’s new head of education.

In her new post, Ms. Powell will oversee all aspects of the Museum’s educational programming and special events for children and adults.

Ms. Powell is a Tyler native who comes to the TMA following more than six years as executive director of the Discovery Science Place, the children’s math and science museum in downtown Tyler. Prior to her return to Tyler in 2001, she served five years as executive director of the Miami County Museum in Peru, Ind.

Ms. Powell, daughter of Fred and Sara Powell of Tyler, holds a Master’s degree in museum science from Texas Tech University and a Bachelor of Arts degree in art history from the University of North Texas. Her extensive record of community service includes volunteer work for Smith County Historical Society, Daughters of the American Colonists, and the Junior League of Tyler.

The Tyler Museum of Art, among only 2 percent of U.S. art museums accredited by the American Association of Museums, is located at 1300 S. Mahon Ave., adjacent to the Tyler Junior College campus off East Fifth Street. Hours are 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday, and 1-5 p.m. Sunday. The Museum is closed Mondays and major holidays.
