An Exhibit that Widens the Label of Pablo Perez-Minguez as a Photographer of La Movida



MADRID.- Photographer Pablo Pérez-Mínguez, Spanish National Photography Prize winner in 2006, pretends that his exhibit “Invisible Details” will widen his label of photographer of “La Movida”, but he recognizes that he has carried that “load” with “honor” for the past 25 years.

Pablo Pérez-Mínguez is best known as the photographer of La Movida for his now historic portraits of personalities from the end of the 1970s and beginning of the 1980s, most of which are included in the exhibit “Invisible Details” which the Museo de America is presenting a total of 111 works of art.

In the exhibit, the photographer gathers the most representative and intimate of his works of art, including before and after the years of La Movida, which gives as a result a profound view of Pérez-Mínguez’ archive which he has assembled in more than forty years of continuous photographic activity.

The works, selected by the curator of the show, Carlos Serrano, and by the author, reflect the vivacity with which he has resolved the work of Pérez-Mínguez in the last few years, and bet on showing the most intimate image by an author obsessed with accepting the spontaneity of life itself.

For the author, the photographer selects with his images magical instants, “apparently invisible to others”, and tries to capture “the footprints of life” in the form of unhealed scars, tattoos, wounds or minimum details barely seen.

According to Pablo Pérez-Mínguez, this selection of 111 “Invisible Details” is filled with “sincere tributes” to light, love, friendship an specially to art and the love of photography.

The artist, one of the most important photographers of the 70s and 80s, pushed photography as art and broke with the aesthetics of the photographic concept through the use of different styles and numerous techniques, but his best known side is the one of a portrait photographer of people from the arts, cinema, theatre and fashion.

The exhibit, which will remain open to the public at the Museo de America until the end of September, forms part of the PHotoEspana 2008 circuit, and includes, apart from a of curious photographs captured during his trips, some famous persons who he has photographed for years.

That way, one can see pictures of Singer Cecilia “with a borrowed swimsuit”, Radio Futura, Alaska on her 18th birthday, Singer and songwriter Joaquin Sabina, film director Pedro Almodovar in “Pedro Drag”, Mario Vaquerizo, Alejandro Sanz or Julio Iglesias on his way to the Bahamas.

The exhibit, which follows a strict chronological order, starts with the “Aquella dicha” photograph, which shows two children in 1968, goes on the 70s with black and white photos of the covers of the magazine “Nueva Lente” (New Lens) and others of famous people and goes until 1976 with images that illustrate Spain immediately after Franco’s death.

After the death of Franco, Pérez-Mínguez said, "we started to see the world in color”, that is why the majority of the images abandoned the black and white, and the 80s is dedicated in its majority to the images of La Movida, with famous people and photos, that for its author, “are icons”.

For the artist, all of the images must have “tension” and many of his photographs from the Madrid of the past and of today vindicates the right to feel a citizen of Madrid and of Spain; "Euskadi and Catalonia can go to wherever they want to go, but Madrid will never get taken away”.
