CHICAGO.- Abstract painting and drawing elements interact with fragmented phrases to reflect the randomness of the thought process in the June UBS 12x12: New Artists/New Work at the Museum of Contemporary Art (MCA), Chicago. Mark Booth presents over 30 new paintings and drawings of playful and poetic texts interacting with colorful organic forms. The exhibition opens at First Fridays on June 6 and runs through June 29, 2008.
Truncated phrases and thoughts written by Booth are intended to represent slivers of overheard conversation, random thoughts, or fleeting memories. Booth binds his unique linguistic fragments within shapes resembling word balloons, as if taken from comic book dialogues. At times absurd, cryptic, or sexual, the texts inspire the creation of the color and tangled webs that surround them.
The drawings range from a controlled use of abstract linear and color shapes to richly multi-layered backgrounds and combinations of intricate patterned networks. The paintings are similar in appearance, but incorporate the use of spray paint.
Booth received his BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design in 1987 and his MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 1995. He leads a tour of his work on Tuesday, June 17, at 6:30 pm. A Summer Star themed First Fridays celebrates gay pride. The Center on Halsted is onsite along with representatives from LArtesan Parfumeur. A summer-themed creation station allows guests to decorate tote bags and bandanas. Specialty drinks are the Summer-tini and the Ray of Light Cosmo. DJ Greg Haus spins music. Macys cardholders and MCA Members may enjoy the Macys Member Lounge.
First Fridays tickets include museum admission, live entertainment, and complimentary Pucks hors doeuvres and are available the evening of the event for $15 ($7 for MCA members). Advance tickets are $10 ($7 MCA members) available through the MCA Box Office at 312.397.4010 or www.mcachicago.org. Doors are open from 6-10 pm. A cash bar is open until 9:30 pm. Guests must be 21 or older to enter with a valid I.D..
