MADRID, SPAIN.-Christie's Madrid sale of Spanish Art held on 3 October 2007 was a resounding success, totalling €14,567,975 with 86% sold by value and 75% sold by lot. Juan Varez, Managing Director of Christie´s Spain said: "Spanish and International buyers demonstrated their enthusiasm for this tightly edited sale and bid fiercely for works of art in all categories from Old Masters, 19th century, to Modern and Contemporary art. This successful auction was also supported by online bidding through Christie's LIVE. The Spanish government purchased two important lots: the sale's top lot, Dejeuner sur l’herbe II, by Miquel Barceló, and a magnificent work by Antonio Saura, Noa from 1959. With tonight's sale total of €14,567,975, Christie's Spain continues to lead the market in Spanish Art. This unique sale established significant records for Spanish artists, including Bayeu's portrait of his daughter, Pablo Palazuelo's two records for a sculpture and a work on paper, and Ángel Ferrant. In addition, established artists such as Francisco Bores, Darío de Regoyos and Luis Gordillo also exceeded their previous records. The Spanish team look forward to the next sale in 2008."
