SJICA Launches Residency Program in South Bay

SAN JOSE, CA.- The South Bay ’s only open-access printmaking studio launches its artist-in-residence program. The San Jose Institute of Contemporary Art ( ICA ) will host four on-site residencies per year to some of the Bay Area’s preeminent contemporary artists. These artists will work directly with a master printer to create a suite of monotypes or an edition of etchings. The ICA is proud to announce their inaugural Print Center artist-in-residence is Ema Harris-Sintamarian. This year’s upcoming artists-in-residence will include Rosana Castrillo Diaz, Doug Glovaski, Darren Waterston and Pamela Wilson-Ryckman.

San Jose-based artist, Ema Harris-Sintamarian, will work in the ICA studio for the month of September and create a series of etchings. The resulting prints will be exhibited and available for sale later this fall. Sintamarian’s work is currently on view at the ICA as part of NextNew2007, open through September 22, 2007. Since arriving in the US , Romanian-born Sintamarian has focused her art work on themes of fragmentation, construction, deconstruction, and analogous structures. Her latest body of work reevaluates the idea of identity, consumption and the politics of being a “socially active human.”

In addition to the residency program, the ICA Print Center offers an ongoing schedule of workshops led by professional printers for artists of all levels. These workshops range from weekend and evening intensives to week-long courses. There are also regular open-access studio days for course participants and experienced printmakers. Artists have the additional opportunity to reserve time to work on an individual basis with the master printer. The intimate creative environment will accommodate up to six printers at one time.
