CULVER CITY, CA.- d.e.n. contemporary art is proud to feature new paintings by New York-based artist Teo González beginning September 8 through October 20. The exhibition will include paintings in various sizes from 5 inches up to 72 inches. Each piece, regardless of size, gives an illusion as being part of a larger whole, as if each painting may actually be a detail extracted from a potentially infinite painting.
It has been six years since González has exhibited in Los Angeles and this is his first exhibition with d.e.n. contemporary art. The new paintings are optically intense with evocative colors and patterns. González places thousands of paint droplets across the entire surface in a sensual and sophisticated composition of sinuous networks, less uniform than the grids in his previous work.
González uses a minimal palette, allowing the viewer to spend more time and thought with a particular color, and consider what a given hue might suggest. The paintings in deep blue tones suggest glistening celestial specks across a nocturnal expanse. In other paintings, González integrates genuine gold flecks onto smooth acrylic panels of aqua, white, or black, creating a dazzling atmosphere of gem-like opulence.
At the same time, González's paintings are about the physical discipline in the creative process: the activity of making a mark (or thousands) within self-imposed parameters, and how far the artist explores the boundary of those parameters. The process and the palette add up to work that is both its own microcosm and universal.
Born in Zaragoza, Spain, the artist lived in southern California for eight years, during which time he graduated Magna Cum Laude from California State University, Bakersfield in 1997 with a B.A. in Visual Arts. He presently lives and works in Brooklyn, New York. González regularly exhibits his work in solo exhibitions throughout Spain, as well as in San Francisco, Chicago, Albuquerque, and Washington, DC. Among the prominent museum collections that include his work are Museum of Modern Art, New York; Los Angeles County Museum of Art; San Diego Museum of Art; and, National Gallery, Washington, DC.
The artist reception will be held Saturday, September 8, from 5 to 8 pm., sponsored by the Library Alehouse. d.e.n. contemporary art is located at 6023 Washington Bl., Culver City, CA 90232. Regular gallery hours are Tuesday through Saturday from 11 to 5:30.
