DOYLESTOWN , PA.- The James A. Michener Art Museum in Doylestown announced a contemporary video exhibition by Peter Rose, one of our region’s best-known artists of that medium. The exhibition, entitled Excursions, features two videos on view in the Pfundt Gallery from July 21 through November 25, 2007. The exhibition is sponsored by Mary Lou and Andrew Abruzzese of The Pineville Tavern.

Since 1965, Rose has created films and videos that deal with issues of perception, time, the structure of language, and cultural mythology. Rose’s innovative and thoughtful video art has received critical praise in the New York Times, ArtForum, and the Philadelphia Inquirer. The Village Voice calls Rose’s work “a powerfully formal, analytic inquiry into the very nature of vision and cinema.”

While the Michener Art Museum has featured video art in several group exhibits, this is the museum’s first solo video exhibition. Brian H. Peterson, Senior Curator at the Michener, explains that video art “is one of the most lively and creative genres in contemporary art, and we’re very excited to be showing the work of an artist with such a distinguished national career. The work in this show is especially appropriate since it features Rose’s personal reflections on the landscape, and Bucks County has such a venerable landscape tradition.”

After the events of 9/11, Rose and his wife took a cathartic road trip across the United States . This journey enabled Rose to, in his own words, “see what our country was about and what we were part of and what it felt like for others.” The Geosophist’s Tears was the result of this trip. Accompanied by sounds created on an antique slide rule, this piece is the culmination of images that seemed to be written by the moving landscape experienced by Rose during his drive.

Rotary Almanac, created in 2000, focuses on a happier and more innocent time. Rose has said that it “is a visual fugue for the landscape as seen through the seasons.”

Rose is a professor of film at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia . He received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Mathematics from the City University of New York in 1967 and then studied film at the graduate level at San Francisco State University . His works have been exhibited internationally at such institutions as the Museum of Modern Art in New York City , The Yokohama Museum of Art in Japan , the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York City , and the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris .

This exhibit is made possible through annual support provided by The Pew Charitable Trusts, the Bucks County Commissioners, and the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Council on the Arts.
