Creative Time Celebrates 33rd Birthday

NEW YORK.- New York NY – Creative Time is pleased to announce its 33rd Birthday with a dinner and art auction, which will take place on May 10, 2007 at the new Bowery Hotel located at the Bowery and East 3rd Street. The event honors New York City Planning Commissioner Amanda Burden, who served 18 years as Creative Time’s Board Chair, as well as Creative Time’s founders Anita Contini and Cee Scott Brown. David Byrne and Deborah Harry are the evening’s hosts. Board member Lisa Anastos is event chair.

Guests such as Jeffrey Deitch, Andre Balazs, Agnes Gund, Joanne Leonhardt Cassullo, Beth Rudin DeWoody and Maya Lin, among others, will all be in attendance to celebrate 33 years of Creative Time. After a seated dinner for 330, surprise performances and bidding begins in a live auction of specially commissioned portraits donated by artists Vik Muniz, Shirin Neshat, and Andres Serrano. 33 + extraordinary artworks will also be silently auctioned, including works by Doug Aitken, Matthew Barney, Marilyn Minter, Jack Pierson, Cindy Sherman, and more. Artwork may be viewed online now and absentee bid forms may be downloaded at www.creativetime.org. Proxy bids will be taken until noon on Wednesday, May 9th.

“It is so exciting to celebrate Creative Time’s 33rd Birthday with the people who made this all possible from the very beginning and who have inspired and guided us over the past 3 decades. We hope to raise funds with this event to help produce artist’s dream projects within and outside of N.Y. said Anne Pasternak, President and Artistic Director.

The event also coincides with the publication of Creative Time: The Book, a 288 page book published by the Princeton Architectural Press available in bookstores on May 1st. Guests attending Creative Time’s 33rd Birthday will each receive a copy of the book in a canvas tote bag specially created for the 33rd Birthday by Jack Spade, and showing one of Creative Time’s quintessential projects: Jenny Holzer: 2004 For New York City, Planes and Projections. The tote bag features an image of a plane high over the N.Y. skyline trailing a banner with the Holzer truism “Abuse of Power Comes As No Surprise.” A limited number of the tote bags will be sold at Jack Spade, with proceeds benefiting Creative Time.

Since 1974, Creative Time, a not-for-profit corporation, has enlivened and inspired the public with the boldest art. From Tribute in Light to Doug Aitken’s Sleepwalkers, Creative Time has presented over 300 projects by more than 1,300 artists who ignite the imagination, explore ideas that shape society, and initiate a dynamic conversation among artists, sites, and audiences. Presenting projects on billboards, landmark buildings, buses, deli cups, ATM machines, and the Internet, Creative Time broadens the definitions of both art and public space. Tickets to the event are sold out. Artworks are available for online viewing and bids at www.creativetime.org.
