Before You Sell Your Phone: A Checklist for Protecting Your Data

When you replace your phone, the old one can quickly become an afterthought. You might take a few photos for the buyer, check its value and start looking for a box. But before it leaves your hands, there is another job to finish: separating the device from your personal information.

Phones hold more than photographs and messages. They can contain saved passwords, banking access, work documents and the codes used to approve account logins. Preparing yours for sale means checking those connections before you erase it.

Whether you are comparing buyers or arranging a sale through Sell Your Mobile, work through these steps while you still have access to the device.

1. Find Out What Is Stored on Your Phone

Start with the information you would struggle to replace. Photos and contacts are obvious, but downloaded documents, voice recordings, notes and messaging histories are easy to overlook.

Look through your Downloads folder and any private or locked folders you use. If your phone takes a memory card, check that separately.

Some files may already be saved in a cloud account. Others might exist only on the phone. Knowing the difference helps you avoid deleting the only copy.

2. Back Up Your Files and Check the Results

Choose a backup method that suits your phone and its replacement. Depending on your device, that might involve iCloud, Google backup, a computer or a manufacturer’s transfer tool.

A general phone backup does not necessarily include everything inside every app. Messaging services and protected folders may need their own transfer process.
Once the backup or transfer finishes, open important files on another device. Check that your photographs load, your contacts are present and any conversations you need have transferred.

Do this before resetting the old phone. Discovering a missing folder is much easier to fix while the original files are still available.

3. Transfer Your Account Access

Your phone may be the device that receives verification texts, generates authentication codes or approves sign-ins. Erasing it too soon can make getting into your accounts difficult.

Set up your main email account on the replacement phone first. Then check your banking apps, password manager and other essential services.

If you use an authentication app, follow its transfer instructions. Keep recovery codes somewhere secure and separate from the phone you are selling.

Test a few important logins before moving on. You should be able to access the services you need without relying on the old device.

4. Move Your Mobile Number

Transfer your mobile service before removing it from the old phone.

For a physical SIM, move the card to your replacement and check that calls, texts and mobile data work. If you use an eSIM, follow your provider’s instructions, as the process can vary.

Once the transfer is complete, remove the old eSIM profile as appropriate. Deleting a profile does not necessarily cancel the mobile plan, so contact your provider if you also want to close the service.

Remove any physical SIM and memory card before packing. Keep them somewhere safe rather than leaving them loose beside the parcel.

5. Remove Accounts and Ownership Locks

Deleting photographs or removing the screen PIN does not release every connection between you and the device.

For an iPhone, follow Apple’s current instructions for signing out, disabling Find My and removing Activation Lock. For an Android phone, follow the manufacturer’s instructions for removing Google accounts and any associated manufacturer account.
These protections help prevent unauthorised use, but they can also stop the next owner from setting up a phone that remains linked to you.

If it is a work-managed device, ask the organisation’s administrator whether it needs to be released from management. Resolve account or ownership restrictions before sending it.

Never give a buyer your account passwords, authentication codes or recovery codes.

6. Perform the Correct Reset

After checking your backup and removing the relevant accounts, use the phone’s built-in option to erase its contents or perform a factory data reset.

Read the prompts carefully. Options relating to eSIM profiles and removable storage vary between devices. Use the manufacturer’s current instructions if you are unsure.
Let the reset finish and check that the initial welcome screen appears. Leave the phone there without signing back into your personal accounts.

If the device cannot be erased because it will not turn on or has a damaged screen, contact the buyer before proceeding. A phone that appears unusable may still contain personal information.

7. Check the Sale and Packing Details

Before you sell your phone online, review the model, storage capacity and condition you supplied. Report any known faults and keep a copy of your quote or order confirmation.

Take photographs of the phone’s condition before packing it. Switch it off and follow the buyer’s packaging instructions, using protection that prevents movement during transit.

Check the carrier’s requirements for phones containing lithium batteries. Do not post a device with a swollen, leaking or otherwise damaged battery; seek advice about an appropriate handling option.

For customers using the service, Sell Your Mobile’s FAQs explain its paperwork and sending requirements. Keep your lodgement receipt and tracking number until the transaction is complete.

Before sealing the parcel, make one final check: your files are accessible elsewhere, your accounts work on your replacement device, and your SIM and memory cards have been removed. With those jobs finished, the phone is ready for its next owner.
