FALLS CHURCH, VA.- On September 25, Quinn’s Auction Galleries will present a 400-lot online-only Fine and Decorative Arts Auction brimming with fresh-to-market goods from northern Virginia estates, residences and private collectors. The diverse offering includes fine, modern and Asian art; furniture, silver, art glass and decoratives; and ancient objects.

Highlights include modern and contemporary works by Jaune Quick-to-See Smith, Edward Ross, Joe Tilson, Robert Natkin, Richard Paul Lohse, and others, alongside Inuit prints by Martha Ittuluka’naaq and Luke Anguhadluq.

European and American paintings include works by Daniel Ridgway Knight, Eugene de Blaas, Heywood Hardy, Louis Aston Knight, and Maria J. C. a’Becket.

The sale is also highlighted by an extensive selection of American art glass by Tiffany Studios, Steuben, Quezal, and Loetz, as well as historic religious objects, including a 16th-century French processional crucifix and 18th-century Papal States silver.

Additional offerings include Mid-Century Modern furniture, Chinese export porcelain, Japanese woodblock prints, Byzantine glass and other distinctive decorative-art pieces; and scientific instruments.

A strong candidate for top lot of the auction is an oil-on-canvas painting by Daniel Ridgway Knight (American, 1839-1924) titled Woman on a balcony (1921). Artist-signed at lower right, the artwork is a vivid depiction of a woman standing on a balcony surrounded by flowers. It measures 45 inches by 34½ inches (sight, minus the 54½-inch by 44½-inch frame) and is one of two paintings by Knight that will be up for bid. The pre-sale estimate is $20,000-$30,000.



Also expected to attract keen bidder interest is a tempera-on-cloth painting by Jamini Roy (Indian, 1887-1972) titled Snake Charmer. Rendered in red, ochre, green and black with bold outlines and patterned garments, the 22½-inch by 17-inch painting shows a woman with two birds. It is signed in Bengali at lower right and is housed in a gilt and black frame with fabric liner. The estimate is $15,000-$20,000. This, too, is one of two paintings by the artist that are entered in the sale.



A 1979 pastel and graphite-on-paper by Jaune Quick-to-See Smith (Confederated Salish and Kootenai Nation, 1940-2025) is an abstract, map-like composition that combines loosely-drawn linear forms and pictographic marks with broad passages of rust, ochre, brown, olive, and coral. It is from the artist’s Porcupine Ridge Series and is signed “JQTS” at lower right. A label is affixed for Art Planning Consultants of New York. Measuring 38inches by 31 inches framed, the painting is expected to bring $6,000-$9,000.



Hunting Scene, an oil-on-canvas by Heywood Hardy (English, 1842-1933) is artist-signed at lower left. The work is 23 inches by 28 inches (sight) and attractively framed. It should realize $4,000-$6,000.

A fantastical nocturnal still-life oil-on-canvas by Victor Nizovtsev (Russian-American, b. 1965-), titled Dream Above the City, is artist-signed lower right and measures 29 inches by 41 inches. The wildly colorful work features flowers, glowing lanterns and sleeping figures suspended above a village. It is accompanied by the original signed gallery statement from Troika Gallery (Easton, Md.) and carries an estimate of $3,000-$4,000.



A 19th-century Japanese six-panel folding screen (byobu) dating to the late Edo–Meiji period is rendered in ink, color, gofun, and gold leaf or gold pigment on paper. The continuous panoramic composition depicts an extensive samurai campaign unfolding across coastal waters and mountainous terrain, with armored warriors, commanders, fortified compounds, heraldic banners, and troop-laden vessels appearing between broad banks of stylized gold clouds. It is painted in the traditional yamato-e manner associated with the Tosa school and its followers, and the screen is finished with patterned brocade borders and a dark outer frame. The precise historical episode has not been identified, although the imagery likely derives from a celebrated medieval military chronicle. The estimate is $2,000-$3,000.



Artworks by the renowned African American abstract painter and sculptor Sam Gilliam (Washington, DC, 1933-2022) are highly prized by collectors. A silkscreen print by Gilliam titled St. Albans (1976) is pencil-signed, titled, dated and editioned 56/60 by the artist. It measures 22¾ inches by 30 inches and is nicely contained in a 30¼-inch by 37-inch frame. The pre-sale estimate is $2,000-$3,000.



An octagonal Italian Renaissance Revival ebonized-wood center table is closely related to the work of Florentine cabinetmakers Luigi and Angiolo Falcini. Elaborately inlaid in varied fruitwoods, mother-of-pearl, pale materials, and fine metal stringing, this attractive piece should find a new home for $2,000-$3,000. The radiating top incorporates floral arabesques, classical motifs, circular foliate medallions, and a central portrait medallion depicting Christopher Columbus. The table is raised on a decorated faceted pedestal and quadripartite base, with a brass tilting mechanism beneath.



A color etching and aquatint on paper by Somnath Hore (Indian, 1921-2006) titled Genesis is impression-signed and dated 1960. One of five or six created by the artist, the print depicts a mother and child enclosed within an oval field surrounded by turbulent, heavily textured passages of burgundy, turquoise, and gray. It is signed and dated in pencil at lower right. The estimate is $2,000-$3,000.



A pair of circa-1905-1915 Tiffany Studios (Corona, NY) gold iridescent Favrile glass candle lamps with Grapevine shades, from a collection of Tiffany and Steuben art glass, feature spirally-ribbed stems, scalloped bobeches, candle sleeves, and metal fittings. Each is fitted with a silvered pierced-metal Grapevine-pattern shade lined with fabric and mica. The shades are stamped TIFFANY STUDIOS and one glass base is engraved L.C.T. The pair should illuminate the room for $1,000-$1,500.

With its extensive range of fine art, historic objects, art glass, furniture, and Asian and ancient material, the September 25 Fine and Decorative Arts Auction brings to the auction block an exceptional selection to please collectors across a wide range of interests.
