MADRID.- The Museo Arqueológico Nacional in Madrid has added 239 coins of exceptional historical significance to its collection of Andalusi numismatics, strengthening a holding that already ranks as the most comprehensive of its kind in the world.

Acquired by Spain's Ministry of Culture over the course of 2024, 2025 and 2026, the coins all come from the Tonegawa Collection and span virtually the entire history of al-Andalus, from the eighth through the fifteenth century. The Ministry said it invested €988,126 in the acquisitions, which were made through a series of auctions.

Among the most important pieces are coins known through only a handful of surviving examples—or, in some cases, unique specimens. Highlights include a gold dobla issued under Boabdil that records his complete genealogy and the first dirham struck in al-Andalus after it emerged as an independent political entity.

Beyond their rarity, the coins offer historians an unusually direct material record of the political and cultural transformations that shaped Islamic Iberia. Changes in inscriptions, rulers, denominations and minting practices can illuminate not only shifts in political authority but also the economic systems, religious ideas and social structures of successive Andalusi societies.

The latest purchase comprised 60 coins acquired for €402,198. It followed three earlier acquisitions involving groups of 88 coins for €214,955, 39 coins for €147,778 and 52 coins for €223,194. Several of the works had previously been declared non-exportable by Spanish authorities because of their rarity and limited representation in public collections.

The additions further reinforce an already extraordinary numismatic collection at the Museo Arqueológico Nacional. Its holdings encompass more than 300,000 objects dating from the sixth century B.C. to the twenty-first century, making it the leading collection of its kind in Spain and one of the most significant internationally.





Within those holdings, approximately 17,000 coins are connected with al-Andalus and its territories, covering the period from the Muslim conquest of the Iberian Peninsula in 711 through the fall of the Nasrid Kingdom of Granada in 1492. According to the museum, the group constitutes the world's most complete collection of Andalusi coinage.

The museum's interest in preserving the monetary heritage of al-Andalus stretches back to the origins of its collections. By the late nineteenth century, its Andalusi numismatic holdings were already regarded as the strongest in their field. They have since become an important resource for scholars studying the political, economic and cultural history of medieval Iberia.

The newly acquired coins also reflect the institution's broader effort to use objects as evidence of Spain's multicultural past. Rather than functioning simply as currency, the pieces preserve names, titles, dynastic claims, religious formulas and other information that can help reconstruct societies whose histories were shaped by repeated political and cultural change.

To mark the acquisitions, the Museo Arqueológico Nacional will host a roundtable discussion on November 4 in its salas nobles. The event will examine the newly acquired coins and the wider significance of the museum's Andalusi numismatic collection.
