Orian Rose Trio Delivers Compelling Performance at Timucua

The Timucua Arts Foundation upheld its reputation for excellent curation in its April Jazz Series by featuring Orian Rose, whose technical command has established him as a prominent figure in the contemporary jazz scene. Leading his trio alongside Moshe Elmakias and Bar Filipowicz, the drummer and composer delivered a set that thoroughly captivated the audience.

From the first tune, Rose’s presence behind the kit locked the ensemble's timing into place. He demonstrates a highly disciplined approach to complex polyrhythms, balancing a strong heavy groove with precise technical control that naturally anchors the ensemble. His compositions are structurally tight and full of unexpected twists, maintaining a fluid, dynamic energy throughout.

The core element of the night, though, was the seamless interplay between Rose and his bandmates, Moshe Elmakias and Bar Filipowicz.

The chemistry on stage was exceptionally precise; the three musicians anticipated transitions fluidly. Without relying on overt cues, they moved through complex arrangements with remarkable cohesion. A sudden drop in volume or a quick accent from Rose’s drums would instantly be complemented by Filipowicz or answered by a sharp run from Elmakias. These sharp transitions regularly shifted the energy of the performance, eliciting strong engagement and applause from the audience throughout the night.

By the time they wrapped up, the performance highlighted the creative possibilities of an intricately synchronized rhythm section operating with complete technical clarity.

For those who missed the performance, Rose is returning to the Timucua Arts Foundation this May for World Music Month, this time leading the Pardes Quartet. He will be reassuming his roles as bandleader, drummer, main composer, and arranger.

Anticipation for the upcoming performance is already building following the success of the April trio gig, making the May date a highly anticipated event on the series calendar.
