ROME, ITALY.- The Spanish Academy in Rome presents Ricardo Calero – The Disparates. Continuing an Unfinished Project, on view through April 20, 2007. The unfinished work of Goya, the paradigm of the modern artist, left posterity with twenty-two images from a series known by the suggestive title of 'The Disparates'. It is now almost two centuries since this project was interrupted. The idea of this exhibition is to return to this series and, respecting its creative intentions, to begin to increase the number of images in an endless process.

Through its museum, the Council of Fuendetodos, Goya's birthplace, has commissioned the artist Ricardo Calero to work on the "Disparates" series, in order to create works which in some ways continue the collection of original Goya etchings. The result of this study and experimentation is the DISPARATES OF FUENDETODOS and the LIGHT ETCHINGS. This collection of work mixes etching, photography and the action and creation of the object. This was field work, a method this artist frequently uses, in which he involved farmers and members of the Civil Guard from Fuendetodos who helped to execute these pieces. There are papers that have been "etched" using gun shots or that have been "planted" in the fields of this Goyeresque and surreal land.

These pieces, now united with the 18 created by Goya, are on display in this exhibition, which shows us Goya's thoughts and artistic reflections, together with the vision of art and society of a modern artist paying homage to the genius from Fuendetodos.

Ricardo Calero is one of our most interesting internationally famous artists; he is methodical and silent and explores concepts with clear philosophical roots: memory, the void, absence, silence, light, and so on, creating in this way his own personal language which both identifies him and defines his thought. His work is difficult to categorise in terms groups of trends in Spanish art, although it perhaps has most in common with the essential spirit of conceptualism.
