Fridericianum in Kassel launches international search for new director

KASSEL.- One of Germany’s most historically significant contemporary art venues is entering a new chapter. documenta and Museum Fridericianum gGmbH has officially announced an international search for a new director to lead the Fridericianum in Kassel, signaling both continuity and renewal for an institution closely tied to the legacy of documenta.

Owned jointly by the City of Kassel and the State of Hesse, the nonprofit organization sits at the heart of one of the world’s most influential exhibition platforms. Beyond organizing the renowned documenta exhibitions, it oversees the Museum Fridericianum, the documenta archiv, and the documenta Halle—forming a network dedicated not only to presenting art but also to researching, preserving, and communicating its evolving discourse.

A key role at a globally connected institution

The incoming director will take on both artistic and operational leadership of the Fridericianum, working in close coordination with the broader management of documenta gGmbH. The role comes at a moment when the institution is looking to strengthen its presence locally while deepening its international reach.

Unlike traditional museums, the Fridericianum operates without a permanent collection. This gives it a unique flexibility—and responsibility—as a platform for contemporary art. Outside the periodic documenta exhibitions, it has built a reputation as an independent venue for ambitious programming, often realized through partnerships with leading institutions around the world.

The new director will be tasked with shaping that program, expanding it through exhibitions, public events, and educational initiatives, while ensuring the institution remains relevant in a rapidly shifting cultural landscape.

Expanding influence beyond exhibitions

The position goes well beyond curatorial vision. The director will also play a central role in strengthening institutional networks—both locally and internationally. This includes building relationships with political and administrative stakeholders, collaborating with the University of Kassel, and engaging with regional partners such as the Neue Galerie.

At the same time, the role calls for a strategic approach to audience development, with a clear focus on increasing visitor numbers and integrating the Fridericianum more deeply into the urban fabric of Kassel.

Fundraising will be another critical component. The director will be responsible for securing third-party funding and expanding international support networks, including working closely with the International Friends of documenta, a group of supporters dedicated to advancing the institution’s mission.

Leadership in a complex cultural landscape

The search reflects the increasing complexity of leadership roles within major art institutions today. Candidates are expected to bring not only a strong academic background—ideally in art history or cultural studies—but also extensive curatorial experience on an international level.

Equally important is a deep understanding of contemporary art and its current debates, as well as the ability to navigate a media environment that has become increasingly polarized. The organization is looking for someone who can communicate with clarity and sensitivity while maintaining a strong institutional voice.

Leadership skills will be essential, particularly as the new director will oversee team development and play a key role in rebuilding the curatorial department. Organizational strength, communication skills, and a collaborative mindset are emphasized throughout the profile.

A commitment to diversity ahead of documenta 16

The announcement also underscores a strong commitment to diversity and inclusion—values that have become central to documenta’s evolving identity. Kassel itself is described as a culturally diverse city shaped by more than 170 nationalities, and this diversity is expected to be reflected in both programming and leadership.

Looking ahead to documenta 16 in 2027, the organization is positioning the Fridericianum as a key site for dialogue and exchange, where global perspectives can intersect with local realities.

Applications open until mid-May

The position is based in Kassel and offers what the organization describes as a “responsible and engaging role” within an international cultural team. Applications are open until May 15, 2026, with candidates asked to submit full materials, including salary expectations and availability.

As documenta continues to evolve in the 21st century, the appointment of a new director for the Fridericianum is likely to play a pivotal role in shaping how one of the art world’s most influential platforms moves forward—both in Kassel and far beyond.
