NEW YORK, NY.- The April 30 auction of Fine Photographs at Swann will feature a selection of fine art, historical, and vernacular photographs spanning the full breadth of the medium with curated section of imagery from NASA, a special look at the history of Civil Rights photography, and works from the Kayafas Collection celebrating the wide influence of Palm Press.
Leading the auction is Dorothea Langes A Sign of the Times (Depression Mended Stockings, Stenographer, San Francisco), silver print, 1934, printed circa 1960, at $18,000 to $22,000. Also by Lange is Shipyard workers, Richmond, California, silver print, 1943, printed 1950s ($3,000-4,500); Rebecca Dixon Chambers, Sausalito, California, silver print, 1954, printed 1965 ($2,500-3,500); and Sunday afternoon hurling absorbs attention of the parishs men, Ireland, silver print, ($2,500-3,500). Additional documentary photography includes August Sanders Jungbauern [Young Farmers], Westerwald, silver print, 1914, printed 1993 by Gerd Sander ($4,000-6,000); Ernst Haas, Route 66, Albuquerque, New Mexico, chromogenic print, 1969, printed later ($3,000-4,500); and Bob Adelmans Innocent bystander arrested, Birmingham, Alabama, silver print, 1963, printed 1980s ($2,500-3,500). Images by O. Winston Link, Walker Evans, Arthur Rothstein, Berenice Abbott and Lewis W. Hine among others also feature.
Contemporary photography includes a rare group of seven Nimslo 3D photographs from 1983, including a portrait of Cindy Sherman by Richard Prince, a self-portrait by Robert Mapplethorpe, and images by Christopher Rauschenberg, Lucio Pozzi, Peter B. Kaplan, and Laurie Simmons ($12,000-18,000). Nobuyoshi Arakis Untitled (Watermelon), from the Colourscapes series, chromogenic print, 1991, printed later ($12,000-18,000); and two works by Loretta Lux with The Book, lifochrome print, 2003 ($7,000-10,000), and The Blue Dress, lifochrome, 2001 ($6,000-9,000).
The Gus Kayafas Collection ranges all the way from nineteenth century to contemporary masters. The diverse work is united by Kayafas unerring eye for elegance and beauty and comes with a deep knowledge of the photographers body of work and approach to image-making. We are pleased to include work by Walker Evans, Frank Gohlke, Garry Winogrand, Helen Levitt, Peter Sekaer, Nicholas Nixon, Lee Friedlander, Rosalind Fox Solomon, Herb Greene, August Sander, and Robert Cottingham, among much more. Highlights include Peter Sekaers Election Posters, 10th Avenue, New York, oversized silver print, circa 1935, printed 2000 ($5,000-7,500); August Sanders Zirkusarstistin [Circus Artist], silver print, 1926-32, printed 1981 by Gunther Sander ($4,000-6,000); and Rosalind Fox Solomons Mother and Daughter, Brighton Beach, New York, silver print, 1985 ($1,000-2,000).
Further works of interest include a run of NASA photographs with William Anderss First Earthrise, chromogenic print), 1968, the iconic first color photograph of Earthrise taken by humans on the Apollo 8 mission ($5,000-7,500), humanist photography by Robert Doisneau, fashion works by Deborah Tuberville, and a portrait by Robert Mapplethorpe.
