Two Picasso Paintings Stolen From His Granddaughter
Pablo Picasso, Maya à la poupée, 1938.

PARIS, FRANCE.- A Paris police official stated that the paintings "Maya and the Doll" and "Portrait of Jacqueline," by Pablo Picasso disappeared overnight Monday to Tuesday from the house of the artist's granddaughter in Paris. The works are worth around $66 million and the house presented signs of breaking and entering.

According to Anne Baldassari, director of the Picasso Museum, several paintings and drawings were taken from the home of Diana Widmaier-Picasso who is an art historian and author of a book called "Art Can Only be Erotic."

Anne Baldassari said, "It was a very large theft."

The work "Maya and the Doll" is a portrait Widmaier-Picasso's mother as a young blond girl in pigtails. Maya is the daughter of Picasso and Marie-Therese Walter, his companion from 1924-44.

"Portrait of Jacqueline" portrays Picasso's last wife.

Paul Lombard, lawyer of the Picasso family, said that two people were sleeping in the apartment at the time of the robbery. He also mentioned that the apartment was fitted with security devices to protect the works.
