GLEN COVE, NY.- In celebration of Asia Week New York, Roland Auctions is presenting a rare, newly discovered prime-period “metascape” painting by highly acclaimed Indian Modernist painter Akbar Padamsee (1928 – 2020) at their upcoming “Important Art and Jewelry” auction on March 28th at 10am.

The never-viewed before Akbar Padamsee (India, 1928-2020) is an abstract cityscape oil on canvas, 1962, in yellows, oranges, and browns, with impasto details, in gold leaf frame, signed Padamsee to lower right with 62; likely painted in Europe while the artist was developing what would be known as his Meta Landscapes, The Art is 36" H x 26" W and framed is 45” x 33”. Estimate $200,000-$300,000.

The painting had been part of a prominent New York City family’s personal collection, from the estate of Elizabeth Debevoise Healy and husband Harold Harris Healy Jr, who purchased it in France in 1964 and kept it in the one family all these years, while tucked away in a sprawling East Side Manhattan apartment. As art world insiders know, Akbar Padamsee was one of the pioneers and stalwarts of Indian modern art, going to live in Paris from his native Mumbai in the early 1950’s.

Silver .850 Quality Dessert Set, 41, rare .850 quality of silver dessert service with dragon motif, comprising 16 plates [8.25" Diameter], and 12 teacups with vermeil interior with saucers, marks to reverse, plates with Chinese characters, teacups and saucers "Wing On Co. 85". [Total teacups and saucers: 124.5 ozt. and Total plates: 331.5 ozt.], estimate $35,000-$45,000, an Indian .900 Silver Palatial Hookah, 20th century, in the form of a woman holding a long snake and balancing baskets upon her head, marked "900" on base and cover, tests for silver elsewhere, estimate $25,000-$35,000 and a Silver .900 Quality & Guilloche Enamel Cigar Box, Engine turned .900 quality silver and guilloche enamel cigar box, the top depicting a steeplechase scene of two jockey's taking a water jump, hinged and opening to reveal a wood lined interior, mark to left interior rim "900". Estimate $15,000-$20,000, a Gandhar Gray Schist Seated Buddha on Wood Stand, The seated Buddha with arms at rest and legs folded in Lotus position, with partial halo remaining behind head, base of slight cloth showing, on a self base with incised and crossed designs, solidly mounted in a wood stand, eEstimate $10,000-$15,000, an Attrib. Carl Kauba (Austrian, 1865-1922) Mounted Native American Bronze, large bronze sculpture depicting a Native American chief in headdress mounted on a horse, no apparent signature, raised on naturalistic stone base, estimate $8,000-$10,000 and an After Giuseppe Filiberti pair of bronze gates, Italian, 19th century, the complimentary pair of bronze gates reproduced from the Scuola Grande di San Rocco, episodes from the life of Saint Roch, depicting the Saint with two families, in wonderful surrounding waves, scrolls, fruit and a framed with a high broken arch pediment, estimate $12,000-$18,000.

Roland is also offering a very rare, and very important Pablo Serrano (Spanish, 1908-1985) "St. Junipero Serra" Bronze, important modern Brutalist-style monumental bronze sculpture. Depicts a standing full-length larger-than-life depiction of Saint Junipero Serra in his hooded Franciscan cassock with bare feet and arms outstretched in an embracing gesture. Boldly signed to base "Serrano". This sculpture was featured in the courtyard of the Spanish International Pavilion of the New York World's Fair of 1964-65. Estimate $15,000-$20,000, along with a Grand Tour Venetian Murano and Micromosaic Mirror, 19th century, with alternating floral and figural cartouches comprising a scene of doves with a banner, a column with griffin capital from Saint Marks Square to left side, and San Todaro depicted to the right, over a micromosaic scene of a gondola, interspersed with elaborate floral decoration, and framed to inner and outer with etched glass panels and twisted Murano glass, estimate $6,000-$8,000.
