| Krems Caricature Museum opens major Oliver Schopf retrospective |

KREMS.- The Krems Caricature Museum has opened a major solo exhibition dedicated to Austrian artist Oliver Schopf, celebrating a career defined by sharp observation, political wit, and masterful draftsmanship. Titled Oliver Schopf: Nothing but the Truth, the exhibition runs from February 21, 2026, through January 31, 2027, and also launches the museums 25th anniversary year as Austrias only institution devoted exclusively to satirical art.
Best known for his long-standing role as caricaturist for the Austrian daily Der Standard, Schopf has spent decades capturing political and social developments with a distinctive, incisive visual language. Since the late 1980s, his drawings have combined careful research with humor and pointed commentary, earning him an international readership. His work has appeared in major publications including Le Monde, The Guardian, El País, Die Zeit, and The Japan Times, among others.
The Krems exhibition brings together around 200 original works, offering a broad look at both the stylistic range and thematic depth of the artists output. Visitors encounter everything from traditional ink drawings to digitally produced caricatures, each distilling complex events and personalities into memorable visual statements. Political leaders, global tensions, and cultural moments appear throughout the showsometimes biting, sometimes playful, always sharply observed.
Among the highlights are works featuring contemporary political figures rendered with Schopfs characteristic satirical edge, alongside drawings that revisit major public scandals and legal dramas. As one of Austrias most accomplished courtroom artists, Schopf has documented high-profile trials where cameras were not allowed, translating tense legal proceedings into expressive visual narratives. These courtroom sketches provide visitors with rare glimpses into moments of public history usually hidden from view.
The exhibition also reveals lesser-known aspects of Schopfs practice. Large-format watercolors demonstrate his lively brushwork and often touch on themes such as architecture and urban design, occasionally critiquing controversial building projects. Still lifes, portraits of famous chess players, and narrative image series further expand the presentation, ensuring a varied and engaging museum experience that goes well beyond political caricature.
A special section developed in collaboration with the Forum Constitution Foundation explores the role of the Constitutional Court through selected caricatures. Accompanied by explanatory texts and publications, this segment connects Schopfs satirical approach to broader questions of law, civil rights, and democratic principles, showing how humor and illustration can illuminate complex institutional processes.
The exhibition opened with the artist in attendance, followed by a public signing session, and additional programming will continue throughout the year, including an artist talk scheduled for November 8, 2026.
With Nothing but the Truth, the Krems Caricature Museum not only honors one of Austrias most influential contemporary caricaturists but also highlights the enduring power of satire to question authority, document history, and spark public reflection.
