President Carter Collection Headlines Brunk Auctions' February Premier Sales

ASHEVILLE, NC.- Brunk Auctions is honored to present more than 200 lots from the Estate of Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter on February 25, offered between British & Continental fine and decorative arts on February 24 and Americana and Southern on February 26.


George II English Silver Basket, William Cripps, London, 1750 ($10,000-12,000)

Paintings and furniture made by the President, a rare gold inaugural medal, personal fishing and hunting gear, signed editions from his personal library, dinner and glass ware, ephemera, decorative arts, woodworking tools, and jewelry and accessories worn by the President and Mrs. Carter are on offer. The auction provides an unparalleled opportunity to own things acquired or made by one of the most famous and influential people of the 20th Century, who remained humble despite his celebrity.

In addition to President and Mrs Carter’s estate are about three dozen lots from an estate featuring 35 photos, letters or other documents, each signed by one of the US Presidents, a nearly complete presentation of presidential autographs from Washington to Johnson. In addition, 40 lots from the estate of Flora Bush Jansing, First Cousin of George H.W. Bush, rounds out the session. This section presents jewelry, silver, drawings by Andrew Wyeth, two paintings by society portraitist Philip de Laszlo, and glass and porcelain, the latter led by a rare and unprecedented large 27-piece Coalport porcelain service featuring animals copied from Thomas Bewick's A General History of Quadrupeds; some of the animals featured have never previously been offered for auction.

The British & Continental Premier sale on February 24 offers nearly 200 lots. Important fine art is led by three paintings by Rosa Bonheur from a private Virginia collection. These are “Tete de Lionne (Head of a Lioness),” “Tete et Avant-main D'un Mulet Gris (Head and Four Quarter of a Gray Mule),” and a study titled “Le Battage du Bles (Wheat Thrashing [or Wheat Thrashing in the Camargue]). Two are cited, the first prominently illustrated, in Atelier Rosa Bonheur: Résumé Du Catalogue Des Tableaux Par Rosa Bonheur, published by Galerie Georges Petit in 1900. Sporting art features works by Heywood Hardy and J.F. Herring Sr., among others, and the Old Master category is led by a rare pair of signed portraits by Wessel Lubbers. The sale will begin with an impressive collection of Georgian silver from the Godfrey Collection featuring a George II basket by William Cripps, an unusual George I thurible by Anthony Nelme, a 1706 Queen Anne English sponge box by Benjamin Pyne, and a pair of 1703 candlesticks bearing the marks of Andrew Raven. Capping Continental examples is a monumental French silver urn or horse trophy.

Tribal carpets from the Susan Gary Collection, Louisville, Kentucky, that include Serapi, Kazak, and Peperdil examples anchor more than three dozen rugs and carpets offered. More than two dozen lots of portraits, furniture, porcelain and silver come to auction from the estate of Wm. Sauer, a Washington D.C. antiques dealer, which is being sold to benefit the Children's Hospital of the King's Daughters, Norfolk, Virginia.

American and Southern works crossing the block on February 26 feature an important, recently discovered wedding portrait by Jeremiah Theus, a large 1852 James Bard painting of the ship United States, five works by Winfred Rembert, an oval still life with flowers and nest by Severin Roesen, and paintings by Regis Gignoux and Elizabeth Verner. MESDA documented and other important American furniture are featured, including examples that descended in the family of Governor John Laurence Manning and Millford Plantation. A selection of fine silver is at hand while the Southern pottery category is capped by an extremely rare monumental Burlon Craig two tone North Carolina stoneware face jug. A large selection of Staffordshire and folk art, and so much more, round out the last day of sales.
