NEW YORK, NY.- Shaping Taste: Asian Ceramics and the Making of American Art & Design brings together leading curators and historians of decorative arts from four American museums to explore the enduring impact of Asian ceramics on American art and design from the nineteenth century to the present.

Moderated by Joan B Mirviss, co-founder of Asia Week New York and long-time exhibitor in The Winter Show, the discussion first considers how nineteenth-century American collectors of Asian ceramics shaped Western understandings of the medium, and how classical Asian forms and surface ornament left a lasting imprint on American design—from Rookwood’s studio pottery to the refined metalwork of Gorham and Tiffany. Shifting to the mid-twentieth century and beyond, the conversation then illuminates the vibrant, reciprocal exchanges between Japanese and American ceramic artists and reveals how museum collections of Asian ceramics continue to inform contemporary artistic practice across Asia and the West.
