LISBON.- In 2026, MAAT celebrates its 10th anniversary. Over the course of a decade, the museum has presented more than 130 exhibitions, showcasing works by over a thousand Portuguese and international artists, thereby strengthening its connection with a diverse range of audiences and establishing itself as a vital presence in the most significant moments and assessments of national cultural and artistic life. This is the legacy MAAT wishes to continue to value.
The symbolic mark of this decade inspired the definition of the programme for 2026.
The years programme begins with Turn Around. A Look at the EDP Foundation Art Collection, the most extensive exhibition ever dedicated to this collection, is considered one of the most important at the national level. It brings together works by Portuguese artists from the 1960s to the present day. The exhibition will be presented in two complementary parts, opening at MAAT Central in February and April respectively, and featuring works by Ana Jotta, Ana Hatherly, Fernanda Fragateiro, Gabriel Abrantes, Helena Almeida, Joana Vasconcelos, João Pedro Vale + Nuno Alexandre Ferreira, Jorge Molder, José Pedro Croft, Luisa Cunha, Paulo Nozolino, Rui Sanches, among others.
Also opening in February is The Central Tejo Carpentry Workshop, 1936-2013, an exhibition of tools and documentary records that evoke, on the one hand, the factorys daily life at Central Tejo and testify to the importance of human labour and industrial power in the construction of modernity, and on the other, the early stages of the relationship between the EDP Foundation and contemporary art.
Brazilian art continues to occupy a prominent place in the programme, with Anna Maria Maiolino Terra Poética opening in March. This is a major anthological exhibition, featuring an important group of original works created in situ for the Oval Gallery at MAAT Gallery.
On the same day, MAAT Gallery hosts Christian Marclay Cities, bringing together a group of works that address themes of urban culture works in which the city, the street and everyday life become spaces charged with visual and sonic signs.
At the end of April, Margarida Correia Mais Alto traces a portrait of a group of Portuguese army parachute nurses who served in Africa during the 1960s and 1970s. Scenes from their professional and everyday lives in Africa reveal moments of work and leisure.
Within a national context, yet with clear international resonance, MAAT presents in September Pedro Cabrita Reis com o coração livre de cuidados.
Also featured is Life is the Game an immersive experience created by Paulo Furtado (AKA Legendary Tigerman, with Yolanda Correia and Eduardo Brito), exploring different languages such as painting, sculpture, cinema, sound and virtual reality.
In October, the museum presents Energies of AI, an exhibition that innovatively explores the presence and impact of artificial intelligence in the arts and in society, bringing into dialogue the work of international and Portuguese artists.
The celebration of MAATs 10th anniversary, culminating during the week of 1 to 5 October, will also include other significant initiatives, such as a special edition of the EDP Foundation New Artists Award (with an exhibition scheduled for 2027), the awarding of the EDP Foundation Art Grand Prize, and an exhibition dedicated to the publications produced by the museum over this decade.
