NEW YORK, NY.- Christie's will present Property from Mr. and Mrs. John D. Rockefeller 3rd from the Collection of Sandra Ferry Rockefeller, a deeply personal and historically significant group of works from the Collection of Sandra Ferry Rockefeller. This remarkable offering reflects a distinct chapter in the Rockefeller family's storied collecting legacy, carefully preserved by Sandra Ferry Rockefeller. The collection showcases the couple's shared vision, spanning Asian art and ceramics, American paintings, decorative arts, and modern and postwar masters.
During the 1960s, Mr. and Mrs. John D. Rockefeller 3rd amassed their collection with the same dedication that defined their philanthropic pursuits. John D. Rockefeller 3rd's passion for Asian art aligned with his commitment to international diplomacy and cultural exchange, while Mrs. John D. Rockefeller 3rd's appreciation for modern and contemporary art was shaped by her long-standing leadership at the Museum of Modern Art, where she served as both Trustee and President. Assembled with passion and discernment, the collection offers an intimate glimpse into how the Rockefellers lived with art.
The collection will be offered across a series of marquee sales beginning this fall, debuting in the 20th Century Evening Sale on November 17, 2025, with Myo, a Kurama granite sculpture by Isamu Noguchi (Estimate: $2,000,0003,000,000). As the first work from Noguchi's seminal series of broken granite blocks, Myo embodies a striking fusion of Eastern tradition and Western postwar innovation. Though acquired after the passing of John D. Rockefeller 3rd, the sculpture reflects the collectors' refined sensibility. Noguchi meditated on the piece for nine years and kept it in his personal collection for nearly two decades. It was gifted to Mrs. John D. Rockefeller 3rd in 1980 by her children, having been acquired directly from the artist.
Sales will continue in December with Luxury Week, where The Rockefeller Kashmir, an Art Deco Sugarloaf Cabochon Sapphire and Diamond Ring of 17.66 carats will be featured in the Magnificent Jewels auction on December 10 (Estimate: $1,500,0002,500,000).
In January 2026, works will be offered across the 19th Century American & Western Art and The American Collector auctions. Among the highlights is Sunset Over the Palisades on the Hudson by Hudson River School painter Sanford Robinson Gifford, previously featured on the cover of a Metropolitan Museum exhibition catalogue (Estimate $1,200,0001,800,000), as well as a wonderful Nantucket painting of the cranberry harvest by Eastman Johnson (Estimate: $400,000-600,000). The sales will mark 50 years since the seminal 1976 exhibition of Mr. and Mrs. John D. Rockefeller 3rd's American Art collection at the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco and Whitney Museum of American Art, which included several of the works to be offered.
The series will culminate in March 2026 with the Important Chinese Art sale, featuring A Rare and Important Gilt-Bronze Figure of a Dragon from the Tang dynasty (AD 618907), (Estimate: $150,000250,000).
Jonathan Rendell, Consultant, Christie's Americas comments: The Rockefeller family's legacy of stewardship and philanthropy is embodied in this group of paintings and works of art. Cherished for generations, they now return to the world to be appreciated anew."
A portion of the proceeds from the sale will benefit Sandra Ferry Rockefeller's foundation, in support of programs that empower youth from diverse backgrounds to connect and inspire one another about their potential impact on society.
