ASPEN.- The Aspen Art Museum presents the exhibit Amy Adler: Make Believe on view through February 4, 2007. Initially known for her photographs of drawings picturing herself as the subject, Amy Adler’s Aspen Art Museum exhibition, Make Believe, features eight large scale pastel-on-canvas works portraying Adler’s young niece—who greatly resembles the artist—each titled with the monochromatic background color of the piece. In these compositions, entitled The Rainbow Hour, the young girl can be seen dressed as a princess, looking out a window, or hugging a teddy bear: normal, daily activities. The Rainbow Hour will be paired with a discrete but related new series, The Sky Observer's Guide, picturing Austin, Texas-based female singer/songwriter Amy Cook. Adler and Cook collaborated on the images as well as the writing for Cook’s forthcoming CD, The Sky Observer's Guide. The unifying elements of vulnerability, innocence, and unselfconscious beauty and grace, interrelate these series. Both are nuanced explorations of strikingly unconventional psychological portraits.

Amy Adler receiver her MFA from the University of California, Los Angeles, in 1995. She has had one-person exhibitions at the Hammer Museum, Los Angeles; and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles. Her work has also been included in group exhibitions at the Contemporary Arts Museum, Houston; the Los Angeles County Museum of Art; the Contemporary Museum, Baltimore; and the Castello di Rivoli, Torino, Italy. In 2000, she was included in the Kwangju Biennale.

On the occasion of the exhibition, the Aspen Art Museum, in collaboration with the artist, will also be producing a children’s book of The Rainbow Hour images.

Amy Cook will debut her new CD release, The Sky Observer's Guide, with a free live performance at the AAM the evening of the exhibition opening: December 14, 2006.
