WASHINGTON.- The Smithsonian International Gallery opens the exhibit Clash of Empires: The British, French & Indian War, 1754-1763 through March 15, 2007. To mark the 250th anniversary of the British, French, and Indian War, this exhibition explores the 3-sided epic struggle for North America and its effects worldwide. More than 300 objects and works of art are on view, including: the original surrender document signed by George Washington at Fort Necessity on July 3, 1754, an original printed copy of Washington's journal of his 1753 diplomatic mission to the Ohio (1 of 8 surviving copies), portraits and historical paintings by Benjamin West, Joshua Reynolds, John Singleton Copley, and others, the only surviving complete pre-Revolutionary War British officer's uniform, which has never been displayed outside of England, Native American clothing and decorative arts and a collection of engraved powder horns, representing a unique North American folk art tradition.
