GARRISON, N.Y.- Photographer Leonard Freed, 77, died due to cancer complications. He was born in Brooklyn on October 23, 1929. In 1972 he joined Magnum Photos. He worked for Life, Paris Match, Der Spiegel, Stern, Fortune and New York Times Magazine. In 1968 he published "Black in White America,"on the civil rights movement, one of more than a dozen of his books. Museum collections around the world have works by Leonard Freed, such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Israel Museum, and the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam.
In 1992 Freed said, "As a kid, I went to museums, but I couldn't tell anyone because no one would understand. I didn't know why I wasn't interested in sports and pop music like everyone else. I'm still not interested in those things."
