Renowned artist Sean Scully talks at the Parrish Art Museum, July 25

WATER MILL, NY.- The Parrish Art Museum announced a special program with internationally acclaimed artist Sean Scully, who will be speaking at the Museum on Friday, July 25, from 5 to 6 PM in the Museum’s Lichtenstein Theater.

The event coincides with the Parrish’s major new exhibition, Sean Scully: The Albee Barn, Montauk, which surveys the artist’s work from 1981 to 2024, with a focus on his formative time spent on Long Island.

During the lecture, Scully will reflect on his overall practice focusing on various bodies of work ranging from the early 1960s to today. During this talk, the artist will highlight specific influences that have had a profound effect on his career. The lecture, titled “Windows and Openings” will emphasize the artist’s continued interest in geometric abstraction in the form of paintings, prints, and drawings. Works to be referenced during the talk will include Heart of Darkness (1982), White Window (1988), Facing East (1991), and Two Windows (2016) among others.

The representation of windows in Scully’s work has emerged consistently throughout his career—first appearing in 1973 with Windows, and more recently with Dark Windows from 2022, Scully will delve deeper into the meaning behind the metaphor in his work providing a deeper understanding.

The discussion offers visitors a rare opportunity to hear the artist share personal recollections of work and the inspiration behind them.

“Sean Scully’s 1982 residency at The Edward F. Albee Foundation in Montauk was brief, but its impact was lifelong,” said Mónica Ramírez-Montagut. “This exhibition brings his Montauk paintings back to the region where they were created, and during his talk at the Parrish, Sean will reflect on these works as well as other pivotal moments in his practice that have left a lasting mark on his oeuvre. A remarkable storyteller with a life as compelling as his art, Sean is sure to captivate attendees. We are thrilled to invite the community to engage with one of the most important living artists of our time.”

Sean Scully: The Albee Barn, Montauk brings together over 65 works, selected in collaboration with the artist, emphasizing the connection between painting, place, and light. For the first time since their creation, 14 of the original 1982 Montauk paintings return to the region where they were produced, reuniting the works with their site of origin.

The exhibition is organized by Mónica Ramírez-Montagut, Ph.D., Executive Director, with Kaitlin Halloran, Associate Curator and Publications Manager.
