OXFORD, UK.- Modern Art Oxford presents Arrivals >Estonia: Kristina Norman - The Pribalts, on view through January 7, 2007. For Arrivals>Estonia, Kristina Norman presents a new documentary that looks at the cultural community know as the Pribalts. This Russian word is used to indicate the Russian-speaking population of the Baltic States. The film follows several young members of this community, whose ancestors came into Estonia during the Soviet era, and is a study of integration and its effects on the artist’s group of childhood friends.

The Pribalts is a moving study of the gap between policy and what integration means for those people affected. It is a personal attempt to come to terms with the complex reality of the Pribalt community in modern Estonia. Norman takes up a case with which she is intimately familiar. By interviewing a group of childhood friends she tries to make sense of her values and ideas. At a time when issues around multiculturalism and integration are at the forefront of debates in Britain, Norman’s film raises searching questions around how cultural minorities are valued within an expanding EU.

Kristina Norman is the eighth artist to feature in ARRIVALS>NEW ART FROM THE EU, a series of exhibitions over two years at Modern Art Oxford and Turner Contemporary, Margate introducing the work of artists from the expanded European Union. For more information visit www.modernartoxford.org.uk.
