JYVÄSKYLÄ.- An interactive exhibition by Johanna Pisto and a multidisciplinary team is being staged at the Museum of Central Finland Art Hall. This exhibition merges visual art, music, video, design, and technology, and is the first to apply sensors developed by Kaiku Team, based on a research project at the University of Jyväskylä. These sensors allow the artworks to respond to touch, creating sound and moving images.
Digital techniques like laser engraving, flat cutting, and UV and sublimation printing highlight the variety of materials and textures. Pisto describes her work as a combination of materials and techniques that builds rich textures and layered visuals for each piece.
“I am fascinated by surfaces and the layering of images, which I build using various materials. I cut stencils, pour color, and consider the relationships between elements, shapes, and lines, utilizing media industry machinery,” says Pisto. “I aim for a dynamic texture, and the most exciting part is the unexpected outcome during creation. The combination of different materials and techniques offers endless intrigue in creating images.”
The works on display in the Aalto2 exhibition by Johanna Pisto are representational mixed-media pieces, depicting imaginative visions of our surroundings. In these, diary-like fact and fiction blend, and sometimes require closer examination to reveal different levels and perspectives from above and below. The exhibition emerges from the merging of various participants, materials, perspectives, and digital techniques, offering an engaging experience for the viewer.
“Touch the chair, listen to the sound, and observe how it transforms the image.”
The exhibition is supported by a two-year working grant from the Central Finland regional Fund of the Finnish Cultural Foundation, allowing Pisto to bring this interactive experience to life.
